So me and an old buddy of mine who lives far away have decided to catch up on our friendship by doing some co op in games. I really wanted to co op in NWN since i never tried it. The problem is that we are both dunces at network setup and anything in that ball park. Embarrising as it is, I need some help to start us up. We just want to play the campaign the two of us. We can't seem to find each others games online on the Gamespy thingy, indeed, I see no games on there at all. Neither can we find each other with hamachi. I guess we are doing something wrong. I suspect the reason we can't get hamachi to work is that my friend uses college internet and thus cannot get permission to portforward 7777.
Im sorry for being such a newbie, but if anyone could post a simple step by step guide on how we can get into the game together that would be much appreciated :) We both have the deluxe/platinum version with the 2 x-pacs. Let me know if you need more details and thanks for the help on beforehand.

Thanks for your help, we both did all this, but my buddy still cannot find my game when I host. We were able to see each other in the gamespy lobby and chat to one another, but that was it. I could not see any games whatsoever by other players in any of the sections "Story, PW action" etc. We could not add each other to buddy list and join that way either.
The guide also says "To host the server you need to host it in game, because of some awkward reason the dedicated server application is not working properly" I dont know what this means. How do you host from in game? When i go ingame and press esc I only see the the normal options that i would in a single player game. Any further help will be greatly appreciated :/
The GameSpy service is not supported in NWN, so is no longer a multiplayer option (that works). If you are having trouble connecting manually, try XFire. You will both need to download, install and create an account. After that have Xfire auto detect your game/s, then click on the server tab and select a server.

Sorry for not responding for a time, my friend was unavailable but we have now tried Xfire. So far we can make a game but when trying to join through Xfire the game says "Attempting to find server" Then a few seconds later "Connection to server has failed. Server is not responding (Timed out)"
Any idea what could be the problem?
This sounds like a port forwarding issue to me. This is a fairly common problem, as most people don't realize that a router will actually interfere with hosting a multiplayer game over the internet unless it's been configured for it. Most developers these days offer services that get around this issue, but for older titles or cases where those services are now discontinued (as is the case with NWN) you'll run into this problem often. Keep in mind that only one computer on your network can be configured for any one port at a time.

You'll need to read up your router's specification to find out how to set up port forwarding. For most routers, typing "192.168.0.1" into the URL bar of your browser will bring up your router's option menu, and you should be able to browse from there to find an option for port forwarding. You'll need to configure it to forward traffic on port 5121 to the IP address of the local machine.

Thanks for your reply, but all the portforwarding neccesary to play NWN is already set up. Did it myself 2 weeks ago. My friend didn't do it though does he need to as well? I'm the one hosting so i figured I only needed to do it
