Hi. I get that error message when I download and install ToEE from Gog. I've tried two different installs (one from Gog galaxy and one straight from the site) and get the same error. The full error message is as follows:

ToEE.eve - Bad Image

C:\Windows\system32\d3d8.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support.

I get the message instantly when I click the ToEE shortcut. Anyone have any idea how I can get the game to run?

Thanks!

Re-install DirectX from Microsoft.
I've tried that to no avail, I'm afraid. It would seem that that download does not attempt to reinstall or fix DirectX after it detects it already installed on the system. Is it possible to 'repair' directX?

You could try a system file scan. Close all applications, without fail... everything! Then open a command prompt that has administrative privileges, and type in:

sfc /scannow

This should detect any corrupt system files.
Sfc didn't detect any problems. I manually looked into system32 folder, and it seems that the file in question (d3d8.dll) is completely absent...there is one called d3d8thk.dll, if that means anything.

I read another thread here on Gog.com where a guy was having the same problem with Inquisitor managed to fix it by running a repair off of his Windows 7 install disc. (Forgot to mention all this time that I'm running windows 7 64-bit). But I'm not sure how I would go about doing that.

I was considering a reinstall of windows (it's about that time anyway), but if the .dll is what it appears to be (a DX8 remnant), then it's possible that it may just not get installed anymore?

Install the redistributable.
I got another 'Bad Image' error attempting to install the redistributable, but for the file xactengine3_1.dll. The installation fails.
