I can no longer load my insanity saves anymore, I assume they are just straight up broken at this point, but if there's any trick that anyone knows, I'd really appreciate it.

I originally beat the game on insanity mode in 2013, but I like to keep saves of fun or important scenes so I can go back and replay them later if I want to. I have stored these saves on various backup drives since 2013. No one else has touched them. I have even used them as exports to the Witcher 3. But today I reinstalled TW2 and tried to load them up, but couldn't. The game said something along the lines of me being on the wrong difficulty for these saves. I searched for a way to change my difficulty settings, then decided to start a new game under insanity difficulty, thinking that it would remind the game I was on insanity mode. That didn't work so I googled it and it was a bunch of people talking about how it is the error message you get when the game blocks saves after you die. However, I have never died in any of these saves.

I'm assuming its a trick to stop achievement hunters from just loading a save they got from someone else? So maybe in the course of moving them around and using them with a new computer or a new version of the game or something, they have been flagged as 'dead saves.' Is there any way to restore them or am I basically shit out of luck? I still have the old PC I played them on(though not with me right now,) would they run on that, or are they basically just completely broken now and I have to throw them away?

My only other thought is that I originally played the game on steam, and now I'm trying to run the GOG version, so there could be a cross version problem? I would be remiss to redownload the game on steam right now though, as I'm currently on a rather low metered access and it would eat half my months roaming internet limit.

And that was a good idea: you shouldn't make things too easy for this clientele.

But why are you crying over the old saves? After so many years, you will definitely have a lot of fun trying again.
