A friend purchased the game. Let me install it. I have played it for a few hours then didn't touch it for a few weeks. I logged on and did a verify files to see if it had any patches and it "fails" every time. The game still launches but I can't seem to get any patches.

I guess a friend bought it for you. If so go to your library and download the latest patch with your browser and install it the old way.
Or did he gift the already redeemed game to you with a new account and only forget to share the account information with you? Then ask him for it and download the latest patch and install it.

And a bit off topic: DRM free doesn`t mean share the game with the whole world ;)

he bought it for himself. as for DRM free, I agree. However, there isn't a lot to prevent people from doing it. Honestly, I never would've bought it. It's not really my style. i was just curious what had been changed/fixed since I last played.

A lot of changes (patches) plus the free DLC's.
