I'm Lvl 24, 139hrs in & have the 'Ugly Baby' main quest line outstanding.
What I'm wondering is, how quests are best approached. I'm trying to finish up all my many lower Lvl quests, in part coz it seems like you lose any significant XP once a quest becomes too low Lvl, but also coz it seems like the right thing to do. However, I've heard that quest Monsters don't respawn & given the XP decrease on low Lvl quests, I'm also thinking that I should do all the side quests before doing Ugly Baby, as that seems like the end game. My reasoning is that it would seem that there's not much challenge/achievement to be had once the main quest is done.
Obviously, I can start afresh, on a harder option, but I don't want to finish the main story & have quests left to do with no significant reward from them, other than just doing them.
It seems like some people have zipped thru the main quest line & already finished the story. If you're one, did you regret that? Have you had to start afresh to get a sense of challenge/achievement?
What are your thoughts?
The order doesn't really matter on the long run as main quest XP is far superior to anything else. You can maximize it if you completely disregard monster nests and abandoned sites as these give you fixed experience points and you never do quests over your level unless there is none other left.

I wouldn't give it too much thought if I were you as you can still finish the side quests after you completed the story, the only thing to worry about is you will easily get over level 30 by the time you are done and some quests might not pose any challenge anymore.
Yeah mmarci, your last point is exactly what I'm concerned about! I don't want to get in a position where there's still quests to do, but little point beyond the intrinsic experience, in doing them. Several people have said that just the intrinsic experience should be enough, but that depends on the quest. While I admire CDPR's gift & talent for story telling, not every quest is a gem. :)
All in all there are some 275 quests, from main quest to horse runs and quent games.

How and when to finish them?

I "finished" things according to the area I had been in, paused the main quest for as long as it took me to DOOM every monster nest, brought back every frying pan andwhatnot.
Only when there had been no question mark (for the moment, they respawn) or other location uncovered, only then I took the main quest a step further.

Still you might to have to go back to an area that you already have done, but these things are on purpose, following a specific quest line.

So when Yen asked me to see her at XY, I did not bother to be there fast and "in time", but went sightseeing and looting instead with no effect for the main quest (other then Yen nagging about frost boils, had been great in its own way).
Well... technically it might be better to not do every quest during the first playthrough and simply focus on the main story and quests related to important characters. Just do the quests when the suggested level fits your character and you'll be fine.

In this game I frankly don't really see any advantage of getting as much XP as possible. The problem wih a completionist approach will get more and more obvious around 30. At this point even without crafted gear you'll get too powerful if you're above the suggested level for a quest or opponent. You'll even rarely need to pay so much attention on using certain potions and special signs (even on higher difficulty levels), which can be a bummer, because that's an interesting aspect of the gameplay.

So it might be smarter to make one playthrough that focuses on the main story and one that focuses on the rest.

The main quest - a series of interwoven events that you can stop/pause at almost any time.
The majority of the quests available are treasure hunts, witcher contracts, secondary quests.
If you skip these, you will "miss" things that will make the main plot more easy.

For me the gathering of XP's and thus levelling up had been a secondary, at least after reaching somewhat around level 20 or so.
If you are after achievements - not the best way to play, but I always considered them worthless :) ...
I'm still attempting to clear all side quests, contracts & treasure hunts before the main quest line. I now think it's even more important to do quests by Lvl ranking, especially as I've lost some quests due to characters either dieing or leaving. I'm not an 'achievement' gamer, nor a competitionist. My prime concern was whether I end up with quests to do that I'm over levelled for. I've learned where to pay more attention on a second playthru & that I should use the manual save function more judiciously. My bugbear with all this, is that the game persists in selecting the main quest line every time I finish a quest. It may seem a minor inconvenience, but unless & untill I deliberately choose a different quest, all the checkpoint & auto saves are listed as, say, 'Ugly Baby' , like at present. Which makes it harder to pick among them if I need to backtrack. :)

Just completed the game and went the clear everything in an area as I go. Next time I will definitely focus on main quest and whatever the right leveled quests are in the journal. Mainly because at times I'd do quests for long periods of time and never level up and I LOVE leveling up :-)
So, I've just been on a CDPR forum where quite a lot of players were saying that while they have many side quests outstanding, they'd finished the main story & coz you get to continue, are now finding the witcher world empty of friends/acquaintances & sad.
This is exactly the sort of info I was hoping to get here. How come nobody even mentioned that? :)
