I wish to go back slightly. the save games only go back half a dozen or so? anyone know where they are stored?

The game only keeps the last 3 checkpoint saves & the last 3 autosaves.
You need to make manual saves if you want to go back further.

No, your manual saves do not get deleted. On the load screen, click on a save; it will show you the time it was made.

Or are you talking about quicksaves? You only get one quicksave. If you quicksave again, your old one is gone.

Your saves are in C:\users\username\documents\The Witcher 3\gamesaves

But manual saves should show up in game.
