did you bow to save him from being 'punished'? (i have no idea if this choice is reflected further into the game) well for me playing as Geralt the answer is no. anybody else think it would have happened any other way?

Didn't do it to avoid punishment, did it to mock the chamberlain. No matter what you pick, Geralt really doesn't like working with the Nilfgaardians.
