Hexxagon II is a puzzle game developed by Argo Games, creators of Argo Checkers, Hexxagon, Night Raid and ugh...*shudders*...Xenophage: Alien Bloodsport. While Xenophage: Alien Bloodsport is rightly heralded as one of the worst fight games ever and one of Apogee's greatest mis-fires, effectively ending Argo Games as a game developer, Argo Game's earlier works were fun and perfectly serviceable puzzle games. Hexxagon II was a game I downloaded to experience based on my nostalgic memories of Hexxagon - the first game I ever purchased. Based off the advertising screens and animation that would play when Hexxagon was closed, Hexxagon II promised improved AI, more impressive animations and entirely new board and playing pieces. When I booted it up, what I found was basically more of Hexxagon. Splitting pieces, jump and spreading across the board to have more pieces than the opponent, the three difficulty levels and the editor were all still present. Yes, the animations were slightly more complex, the sounds were a little better and the AI did seem a little smarter, but it was basically more Hexxagon, albeit on a different board with different pieces, but that was no bad thing. Being significantly older than my young self that played Hexxagon years prior, Hexxagon II was less of challenge now, although the hardest AI still proved a challenge at times. I messed around with the editor once again, creating silly play scenarios weighted both for and against me, along with a few custom designs that proved to be a fair challenge. Overall with Hexxagon II being basically more Hexxagon (the registered half of Hexxagon) - it is still a short and simple but somewhat challenging puzzle game, and would be wisely bundled with it's prequel (and maybe Argo Checkers) to increase the package value if it were re-released here for a cost. However I feel it's real value is in it's preservation as a fairly lost and nearly forgotten piece of MS-DOS and shareware gaming history.

Alexander
AlexanderAlexander is an RTS based on the movie of the same same, and the real-life Alexander the Great. The game follows the same general path as the movie, and includes media straight from the film. Present in the game are Greek, Persian, Indian and Egyptian forces, with a campaign for each. The hybrid 2D/3D engine (2D units, 3D terrain - also used in Cossacks 2: Napoleonic Wars) allows for a very large number of troops on the field. This is used to good effect, as battles can easily contain hundreds of units. Finally, multiplayer and skirmish levels are available, and the soundtrack (of the game and the movie) is by the composer Vangelis.

Dune II: The Building of a Dynasty
Dune II: The Building of a DynastyDune II is often considered the first mainstream modern real-time strategy game and established many conventions of the genre. Even though set in Frank Herbert's famous Dune universe, the game is only loosely connected to the plot of any of the books or the films based from them. Controlling either of the three Houses, the player must fight a number of battles against the other Houses. In the early levels, the goal is simply to earn a certain number of credits, while in the later missions, all enemies must be destroyed. The single resource in the game is the Spice, which must be collected by harvesters. The spice is converted to credits in a refinery, which are then spent to construct additional buildings and units. There are two terrain types: buildings can only be constructed on stone, while the Spice is only found on sand. However, units moving on sand attract the large sandworms of Dune, who are virtually indestructible and can swallow even large units whole. As levels progress, new and more advanced buildings and units are made available, including structures like a radar station, a repair facility or defense turrets and, for units, various ground troops, light vehicles and tanks. Each House can construct one unique special unit, and, after building a palace improvement, can unleash a unique palace effect.
