Martian Gothic: Unification

Martian Gothic: Unification (2000)

by Creative Reality, Buka Entertainment, Take-Two Interactive, TalonSoft
Genres:Adventure, Puzzle
Themes:Action, Horror, Science fiction
Game modes:Single player
Story:Martian Gothic : Unification is one of the numerous titles which came out at the end of the PlayStation lifespan. At first glance, it looks like a typical Resident Evil rip-off with a futuristic paint, a disturbing cover and bad voice-acting. Of course, the game ended up selling very poorly. But it's so much more than that. Incidentally, it is also Creative Reality's last game. Sharing the same team and the same writer than Dreamweb, it comes as no surprise that the game heavily relies on writing and puzzles. This reliance (and a few more things) makes Martian Gothic: Unification a title to look back at.Show more

Never finished the game, and yet whenever I booted it up, I fell in love all over again. The mechanics could use updating to modern sensibilities, but the vibe, the setting, the characters, the core of this underappreciated gem is something that was ahead of its time. Imagine playing Dead Space, but you control 3 crew members at the same time, swapping between them in order to solve puzzles and transferring items via storage lockers and vac-tubes, all the while anyone can be attacked even if you're not playing them. It's a horror story, but far more than that. Mood is a wonderful character villain/antagonist, up there with AM and Shodan, but not as obvious. So much went right for this title, but it was the wrong time and place. Claustrophobic, intense, uncomfortable, mysterious, and dreadful. It's an idea that needs to be revised and relived.

I first played this game as a young child, back when I was more easily scared and disturbed by things. I had always been a Resident Evil fan, and I had been playing Resident Evil 2 for years prior to trying Martian Gothic. Playing Martian Gothic for the first time was an experience I will never forget. It gave me chills, it frightened me, a sensation I lack in my adult years. The entire concept of the game is genius, and way ahead of it's time. You control three characters on what is essentially a haunted base established on Mars. Much like Resident Evil, you solve puzzles, defend yourself against undead and creatures, and try to figure out what happened. The ambience, the music, the environment, it's all horrifying. I wish this game would come back somehow, so I can play through it once more.

RE on Mars but zombies can't be killed, only put down for a few minutes. Limited ammo, limited saves, trial and error sections that will upset you. Major jank even for tank controls and sometimes you'll softlock yourself if you mismanage resources. What do you mean people don't want to play it?
such a well made and horrifying classic. you have multiple endings and you have many ways how to do things while micromanaging the the crew members during the mission. i never played the game since it actually disturbed me so i let me best friend who enjoyed the game and watched him play it back in the day and i have watched him beat it at least 10 different times. great game but not for me lol but a classic that needs to be put in GoG classic vault.

Puyo Puyo
Puyo PuyoPuyo Puyo is a puzzle game in which the player matches four or more "Puyo" of the same color together. This game is the precursor to an identically-titled arcade release. Puyo Puyo is the first entry of Compile's Puyo Puyo series. It was released on the MSX and Famicom Disk System on October 25, 1991; the FDS version was published by Tokuma Shoten as part of their "Famimaga Disk" line of games. The FDS version would later be released on a Famicom cart in 1993. Puyo Puyo would be succeeded by a much more popular arcade game of the same name. Puyo Puyo contains three modes: Endless, Mission, and Verses. In Endless Mode, players match Puyo until the top of their well is filled. If the player chooses, either a giant 2x2 green Puyo or Carbucle will periodically help the player clear space on their board. Mission mode gives the player several challenges to complete, such as clearing a set amount of Puyo or clearing all Puyo of a certain color. Verses mode allows players to battle each other.

Puyo Puyo Box
Puyo Puyo BoxThis is a compilation game consisting of modes from previous Puyo Puyo games. It is Compile's last recognized Puyo Puyo title in the series before Sega obtained the rights. Puyo Puyo Box, being a compilation, primarily consists of modes from earlier Puyo Puyo games, but also contains original content. This game has a plethora of game modes available to the user. It contains ports of "Puyo Puyo" and "Puyo Puyo 2", as well as a RPG-styled quest mode in which the player plays as Arle and battles against members of the other cast in Puyo Puyo matches. It also houses a "Stage Clear" mode in which you have to face either 10, 20, or 30 opponents, as well as two multiplayer modes which can be played with either other players or AI substitutes. For the Quest mode itself, it allowed the player to customize the armory in ways in which made Arle stronger with a double-edged sword effect. You could remove the Puyo Rings in order to beef up her attack at the expense of being unable to see your next pieces for example, and the amount of experience gained and gold won was relative to how big a chain was scored and how quickly the opponent was defeated. The key point in the Puyo Puyo gameplay of Box is that the player can choose a ruleset from either "Puyo Puyo", "Puyo Puyo 2", "Puyo Puyo Sun" and "Puyo Puyo~n". This can effectively lead to 4-player battles where each player plays with independent or mixed rules. This game also allowed for team battles to take place. A special multiplayer mode was made available in this game, known as "Treasure Mode", which was adapted in "Puyo Puyo! 15th Anniversary" as its "Excavation Mode".

Puyo Puyo SUN
Puyo Puyo SUNSatan has enlarged the sun in a devious attempt to get a perfect tan. Arle Nadja embarks on a quest to defeat him in this competitive puzzle game. This is the 3rd installment of the Puyo Puyo games series, and the sequel to Puyo Puyo Tsu. After the highly acclaimed success of its predecessor, Compile took a slightly more retro approach, so players had a more original feel to the game over that of Tsu. The name of Puyo Puyo SUN comes from a Japanese pun on san, and also indicates a new Puyo brought into the game. As Sun Puyo were used in this game, and the game itself is not only set on a tropical beach, but is the third in the series (san (三)) is the Japanese word for the number three), the name served multiple purposes. This game was released only in Japan.

Cadaver: The Payoff
Cadaver: The PayoffCadaver: The Payoff is an add-on that requires the original disc to play. It continues the story and offers four more isometric levels of fiendish puzzles. After defeating Dianos, Karadoc returns to the inn only to find his employers gone, and every living person within the city either dead or transformed into a monster. Seeking the cause behind this, the dwarf fights his way to the local temple, and finds the answers - and his money - deep down in the crypts. Gameplay is similar. Cadaver: The Payoff has only four levels, but they are significantly larger than those of the first game, and the second level has a large number of monsters and scant possibilities to heal.

Puyo Pop Fever
Puyo Pop FeverUpdated version of the classic Puyo Puyo puzzle game featuring the all-new "fever" mode. Better known in the west under the titles Puyo Pop, Kirby's Avalanche and Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, Puyo Pop Fever still follows the classic bubble-popping format (align four or more "puyos" to make them pop), but Sega also delivers completely overhauled visuals with a more hand-drawn look, an expanded roster of characters, and a new "Fever Mode" that cranks up the action to frantic degrees once players fill a "fever gauge" on their screen. Although a four-player mode didn't make the cut, two players can go head to head and compete for points or survival.
