I don't know how someone that's as big a fan of AoE 1 (screw 2 and 3) didn't know about this remake.

So what do you AoE fans here at gog have to say about this remake?

Fine tuned and prettied up a classic.... or blasphemy???

ADDED: I have to ask because Microsoft is never getting another dime from me... even if the feedback is 100% positive. That said... it would make me feel better if I get a lot of blasphemies. lol

Had they gone to 3D I think it wouldn't have worked.

As it is with any remake of a 20 year old game, our memories of playing it are better looking than the actual experience of playing a 20 year old game on today's PC, and I think in this case the developers understood that when updating it.

AOE was a great game, but had limitations/bugs. The remake has those, but ups the resolution, and adds some nice effects, otherwise its the same game. Its ok.
AOE2 is the big one though, that was the really popular one, has a load of mods out there.
AOE3, yes, I agree, its meh at best.
If you like that, try:
https://play0ad.com/
Its free and always in development.
The second game is by far the best.
that's tough
I love them both, but they are both so different. I dare say it's not a fair question.
I couldn't get into the first one. I seriously loved the second though. The HD version was an insta-buy on Steam when it was released, and when Steam released Proton for Linux, AOE2HD was the first game I tried to play with Proton (There's just something extra-satisfying about playing a Microsoft game on Linux).

Biggest problem with the new "upgrades" is 1. More bugs (AoE1:DE is said to have worse AI bugs) and 2. More DRM (AoE1:DE is MS Store locked and AoE2:HD is Steam CEG locked). Personally, I own the DRM-Free Collector's Edition (basically AoE 1 & 2 plus expansions of both, minus the CD-checks). It's the DVD-ROM version that has a blue Ubisoft label like attached image. (The originals were CD-ROM's). Then you just add:-

uPatch (for AoE1):-
https://upatch-hd.weebly.com/

UserPatch (for AoE2):-
http://userpatch.aiscripters.net/

And you basically have exactly the same widescreen upgrade, bug-fixes, increased population caps, etc, as the DRM'd "HD" versions example AoE1 1080p screenshot. Not bad looking at all for the 21 year old non-HD version (especially at 1/4 of the price...)

I don't remember if it was the first or second game, but they made possible bigger armies and some said it did a thing or two to balancing of economy aspect. Not sure about details, there were some articles about it.
There will be no chance it's gonna be on GOG in the near future. Well, if it's not at the very least available on Steam, there is no way I'm gonna buy it.

It looks pretty, but that's it. They haven't changed gameplay (come on, I want my gates in walls) and haven't even improved the outdated scenario editor (triggers were added in AoE2).

It's a 20 year old game. At this point I wish they made a proper new game instead of living off the past glories. AoE4 was announced last year but still nothing has been revealed. If it was set again in the Ancient Age I would be happy.

Tbh the fact that AoE2 has guns and cannons ruins it for me, it just doesn't feel right.

What would be better? Arrows? Rocks? Severed pig heads?
