flamming_python: The idea of AOE was for an RTS game set in the ancient/classical age. And we still don't have a replacement for it.

vv221: We have a great one here: https://play0ad.com/
It’s still in development, but is already fully playable (and actually a great game). And as is often the case with open source software, it might stay in active development forever anyway ;)
I know it, and it's no replacement for AOE.
Just a half-finished game stuck in Alpha since forever.
That it has potential - no-one doubts
I believe one of the original developers hangs around here sometimes.

I agree that this is no replacement, but it is a good alternative. Anyway, I don’t think we will ever see a replacement for AoE 1. And I don’t see the point as it is still playable today.

On the other hand I strongly disagree with the "half-finished" statement, in its alpha state it is already better than most commercial games that got released in these last years. This is no commercial game where "alpha" means it’s unplayable, this is a game that has already seen 15 years of development and has been playable and enjoyable for years now.

It looks interesting in the youtube.. but I'm just not comfortable using torrent so I'll pass. Thanks though. I have a family member who used to have a copy of the original AoE (without the Age of Rome add-on which I really like unfortunately) who is going to see if he can find is disc for me so that's what I'll do. If i get really desperate I guess I can fire the old laptop back up again. The flood killed almost everything I had and the laptop I had before this one was about the only thing that "lived" afterward but even that acted funky after the flood. (sometimes it would just out of nowhere.. despite being always plugged in.. it would just shut down. Right in the middle of a game or something... just shut down. lol)
Deal Breaker.

No WIndows, means no Microsoft Store, means I can't even wish to have it.

I did enjoy AOE 1 and 2, and now that someone reminded me that Battlegrounds was an AOE engine game, that's in my wishlist too.

There is a direct download link to the installer too:
http://releases.wildfiregames.com/0ad-0.0.23-alpha-win32.exe

By the way, if you do not feel at ease with BitTorrent downloads you should have a look at 0 A.D. BitTorrent FAQ.

Crosmando: Tbh the fact that AoE2 has guns and cannons ruins it for me, it just doesn't feel right.

darthspudius: What would be better? Arrows? Rocks? Severed pig heads?
Swords, shields, spears, pikes, bows and arrows, the things you things you normally associate with the middle-ages.
Does anyone know if the fan-made scenarios designed with the old version work in the definitive edition? Since they kept gameplay and building proportions the same.

vv221: There has been a lot of progress on the AI side, and if I’m not careful enough it is fully able to beat me.
Granted, I do not play 0 A.D. often, so I don’t know if it is good enough to keep a good player entertained for a long period of time.

By the way, AI progress benefits the player too, as the pathfinding seems to have been improved quite a lot too.

For open source games in constant development like this one, if the experience is not great the first time you try it, I would suggest giving it a new try every year. This way you can have some really nice surprises when you discover a full year of improvements at once ;)
Thanks, I will keep an eye on it.
