Hi!
Recently all my games that need dosbox won t´start anymore. Dosbox startes, but the window crashes direckty without an error-message and I'm again looking at the game startpage.

I'm using Win10, drivers are actual and beside any background-upgrades that there might have been I did not change anything on my system. And till 1-2 weeks, all games were running fine. I only had some problems to install fallout 1, but after some days and tries it worked although it did not try to run the game itself.
I also just re-installed the gog-software, no effect. Any ideas somebody?

Was there a recent windows update? Those are notorious for breaking games and compatibility.

Though i'd say manually install Dosbox and try running Dosbox against the game's conf file and see if that solves it.
Could download DOSBox Staging and take out the game files manually, then paste them into a DOS games folder. Manually setup DBStaging, then create shortcuts for each game.

Or just Symlink Dosbox Staging so you only need to run one shortcut.

Find DOSBox configuration file with ".conf" extension in game folder and open it with Notepad.

Find in [sdl] section:
output=overlay

Replace it with:
output=openglnb

Try it with one game and see if it works. From what I've read, Nvidia drivers broke "overlay" output in DOSBox some time ago, so it's worth trying.

This will probably help.
I haven't hearead of DOSBox crashing, but newer graphics drivers don't support certain overlay modes anymore, so in my case the screen remained black. Changing the output mode solved the problem.

DOSBox staging doesn't use the outdated modes anymore.

Thanks for all the input.

No windows update prior to the beginning of the problems. I started updating after.

dosbox staging is working for most of the dos-games, although I must confess that one of the main reasons for using gog was that there starting the game just was as simle as click and play so it would be cool if I could get that running there again somehow. I also wrote to their support but so far they could not help me and I was "hoping"
others had the some problem but found a solution.
What is not running in dosbox staging too is privateer the darkening. There the software crashes real fast (window closes) but I think that there is standing "missing or invaid 386fx.driver" Does this give any hint to someone?

It's strange however, that the GOG version does not have this fix in the first place, since the error existed 19 years ago already.

No problem.

As neumi5694 has already mentioned, make sure you take a look at https://www.wcnews.com/news/2011/03/10/privateer-2-no-cd-procedure-developed and https://www.wcnews.com/news/2014/09/30/the-darkening-s-enhancement-patch-gets-even-better as well.

Are there any other games where you're still running into issues in Dosbox Staging?

as far as I tried all my dosgames are running in dosbox staging, except privateer2. I looked at the links you provided. The patch did not work, and I will need some time to look threw the rest of the data since I'm pretty unexperienced in editing files, etc.
Hmmm... Might try DosBox-X. It has higher compatibility, and you can run windows 95/98 in it too. Though it's a bit slower. Likely just do a drop-in replacement.

https://dosbox-x.com/
Well I just downloaded a couple of dosbox games and installed them to see if I would also have the issue. Running Windows 10, Professional 64-bit and the two games I downloaded did run. I did notice something different with one of them that at least I don't recall it behaving this way, but this isn't a dosbox issue as it is apparently something gog must have changed. But running Heroes of Might and Magic now results in a dos menu showing up with 3 choices on it. Pressing 1 starts HOMM. I don't recall that happening before as my memory insists I used to just double click the icon on the desktop and HOMM would run. Now I have to go through that menu. But again, that's not a sign of dosbox not working, that's just a sign of some option or other in the bat file must have changed (or, you know, it didn't change as I'm just not remembering that I always went through that menu before).

You should open an issue for Privateer 2 on https://github.com/dosbox-staging/dosbox-staging/issues as well.

Also take a look at https://www.gog.com/forum/wing_commander_series/privateer_2_unofficial_patch_thread/post1 regarding the patch. I know you said it didn't work, but Vagabond provides additional instructions you can try.

Are you running the games through Galaxy?

ADDED: I'm only asking because of the comment about "I'm again looking at the game startpage" and since I've never used Galaxy before I'm not sure but it sounds you may be running them through Galaxy and perhaps it's a Galaxy issue????
