+ many older Microprose modern flight combat sims where you are supposed to read a book just to learn how to start the jet engine, or all the various radar/weapon systems... Gunship 2000 was an exception, I learned and played it quite a lot.

As far as flight combat sims go, I preferred WW1 or WW2 era flight combat sims as their controls were fewer and easier to learn than with modern-era jet combat sims, and they were more about head-to-head dogfights than shooting a missile at the enemy 5 miles away, and sending out flares and chaff trying to evade enemy's missile on your tail.

There's a quicksave mod for FarCry if that will help you. Loved that game back when it came out but it definitely could be frustrating in places with the spread out checkpoints.

Also agree about FTL. Well, kind of. MOST of the game I love but that friggin' final fight had me uninstall after around 20 tries at it.

STALKER - Shadow of Chernobyl - got all the way through it but can't get past the nuclear countdown at the end.

STAR WARS Empire at War - tried to so hard to get in to this but I just don't have the patience to learn eveything required to get a handle on these types of RTS games. Ultimately felt overwhelmed and gave up atter 2 hours.

Dragon Age Origins - man I was loving this story but after 10 hours I just couldn't get past a certain part - either I totally suck at this type of combat or I was missing something pretty significant. Shame, I was about 10 hours in...

Alien Rage - trying to get through this at the moment but the Boss fights are getting stupidly hard for me. It took me around 50 attempts to get past one and I'm stuck again - I don't think I'll be going through that number of attempts again before abandoning the game which is a shame as it's a really fun straight shooter.

Resident Evil HD Remaster - huge fan of Resident Evil 4-7 and Revelations but missed the original games. I so desperately wanted to experience the original. However, I'm a serial saver in games and given the format of only being able to save using the ribbons for the typewriter, that totally stressed me out. I want to know before I start a game that I can save and call an end to the session whenever I feel like it - knowing that I might be wasting a precious ribbon by quiting the game put me off loading the game up. Ultimately I gave up after around 10 hours of play.

Perhaps the real issue is that FTL has permadeath? Like Don't Starve or Project Zomboid.
It takes a while to understand and adopt this system, in the end, it solves balancing problems, which most of classic save-load games experience.

One can easily make a save-load him/herself though by backing up the files manually, the game does not disallow this cheating per se, but in the end, you might not like the outcome... I did try that and it was my outcome. The most thing which permadeath kills is, IMHO, the gaming addiction - the game becomes game, there is no "investment", "ho hard feelings", which is actually great. The mechanism is completely opposite in nature to "farming" and "character building" from RPGs (which dopamine mechanism is more addictive than alcohol). But it only works if the difficulty is correct.

If you want to explore CNPP, you better do it with mods like: "Hidden Paths 2" or "Call of Chernobyl", where you can play as Monolith faction. In vanilla SoC, you should run straight into middle of powerplant towards gates, ignoring everyone. The fake end (wish) is close to that event, but the real end begins with finding the door inside the plant.

Whoot? Absolutely love helicopters in GTASA (flying under bridges etc), the horror were planes in GTA:VC because they required pressing holding several keys at same time - and very very few keyboards possess true unlimited key rollover (NKRO), most keyboards manage 2-3 keys tops, then they cut other keys.

I WANT to love them so much... I am shit at playing.

Fallout (1) and Majora's Mask.
I'm very thorough when playing games. I don't want to play them through a second time most of the time, so I try to do everything I can in a single playthrough, and I play cautiously. The time limits on these two really made me hate them.

I think it is possible to save anywhere in vanilla Far Cry, but you have to use a specific console command for saving. Yeah I used it a lot, it made the game more enjoyable to me than trying to rely on save points, especially as in some levels you apparently could miss some save points because you didn't take the most obvious route to your next destination (e.g. if you decided to sneak around the whole enemy base, instead of fighting your way through it).

And that's IMO the recommendable approach. Far Cry is really great with quicksave. There is so much to explore, so much to try. And a lot of stuff really leads to interesting results - but you don't don't take that chance if you're afraid to a lose a lot of progress...
I really don't understand why the devs made that save point decision. Same with Crysis btw.
Pretty much any Nintendo hard game: Super Meat Boy, Ghost'n'Goblins and similar games. I'm unsure if I'm at all able to beat these games, even given a lot of practice.

Regarding games that are too complicated: I have started Europa Universalis IV, Dwarf Fortress and TIS-100 and been stopped in my tracks by the high learning curve. I'd still like to believe that I could play them if I only got interested enough to slog through the initial learning phase though, as my experience with these things are that it is possible if you're just willing to spend enough time with them. But maybe I'm just fooling myself.

Personally I perceived the flight missions in GTA:VC to be a lot easier than those in GTA:SA. One of the missions I hate the most in all the GTA games is one taking place in the San Francisco city (whatever it was called) involving small remote controlled bomber airplanes. Merely thinking about that mission is enough to kill of any desire to play that game again. And I seem to recall that the flight school missions where pretty hard too.
