== BUG REPORTING ==

Please use: http://mantis.gog.com and include
1. steps to reproduce the bug (if possible)
2. screenshot or movie showing the bug (if possible)
3. Galaxy Client logs (see below)

Where can I find Galaxy logs on my computer?
On Windows 7 or later: C:\ProgramData\GOG.com\Galaxy\Logs
On Mac OS X: /Users/Shared/GOG.com/Galaxy/Logs

== FEATURE SUGGESTIONS ==

Please use: http://www.gog.com/wishlist/galaxy. For feature suggestions and votes on them please try do explain how Galaxy and its users will really benefit from it.

== IMPORT ALREADY INSTALLED GAMES TO GALAXY ==

1. For GOG games installed using installers from the last few months (so called Galaxy-compatible installers)
Click the Galaxy logo button on top of the sidebar and select "scan and import folders" - it will find all compatible games within that folder and add them to the Client.

2. For remaining GOG game INSTALLATIONS
Find the game in the Library (click on the image of the game), then click the More button and select "Manage Installation" -> "Import folder" and point the folder selector into the folder where that game is installed.

== KNOWN ISSUES ==
- throttling max download speed is not yet possible
- notifications related to incoming chat messages and friend requests does not always disappear instantly when consumed and may require reloading Store page
- games imported from existing installations will auto-update once, even if updating is disabled
- Moving Galaxy from /Applications on Mac OS X will stop the app from working
- Galaxy cannot be launched by other users on the same computer

For everyone who has a problem with missing api-ms-crt dlls in Client's versions post 1.1.5:
Please install one of those windows update: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2999226 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3118401
You may need to update Windows to meet the requirements for these:
For Windows 8.1 and for Windows Server 2012: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2919355
For Windows 7 and for Windows Server 2008 R2: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/976932

You can also try reinstalling Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables 2015 (x86) if you meet above requirements.
Available here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=48145

If above instructions doesn't work for you, create a separate issue on mantis.gog.com and we'll try to help you individually.

Please note that this solution only helps with the missing api-ms-crt dlls.

Answering this question: Why 1.1 doesn't work after updating to 1.2?

This is happening probably due to incompatible database from version 1.2, please delete this folder:
%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\GOG.com\Galaxy\storage
usually
C:\ProgramData\GOG.com\storage\

Then you'll have to use scan&import (menu under the top Galaxy logo) function to see your games back in Galaxy Client.

Obviously I can't say with 100% certainty since things can always change but it looks like the ability to set download location for extra's is being worked on. If this makes the next patch though I do not know but I assume it will be in the released version of 1.2. There is more of course but that is the big one people wanted.

Of course can't go wrong with a little poop slinging now can we?
I actually am really not liking the fact that the installers download into the !Downloads folder within the install folder. This is actually HORRIBLE behavior. I set mine up so that when I download the installers, they would back up to my NAS in case my local hard drive crashes (which has happened more than once). In the current scenario, now if the drive with the games dies, so goes the installers as well unless I manually go and copy/move every single one back out to the NAS.

PLEASE put it back the way it was where you could specify a download folder for the installers. Making the same drive/folder the default is just asking for trouble and counter-productive to people who are actually wanting DRM free installers handy offline when the drive dies. :(

Options are good. Changes without an option to go back to the previous behavior is bad!
I suspect i allready know the answer to this but im hopefull.

Is there a way to set a GLOBAL DO NOT UPDATE for installed games, the %^&$^% just decided to re-enable update on all my games ( even though i had previously disabled that) and proceed to update the fucking lot.
Im not on a super internet highway.
I download the offline installers and keep up to date that way from time to time ( a family member has fibre now :) )
Guess ill uninstall this useless to me program which seems barely functional , it seems to have no option to even notify me theres an update so i can do manual download that ive seen , bar visiting the website and manually checking each in turn

Not to mention the interface sucks, take the van helsing series the names are cut of on the list as they are to long.
The download que keeps flicking back to installed programs etc, etc

What a horrible program its been around how long now ?

On 1.2.x yes, go to the GOG COM logo -> Settings -> Features -> Uncheck Auto Updates. Pre-1.2.x you have to do this manually for each game by clicking MORE -> Settings -> then turn off auto-update. You will then get a blue dot telling you an update is ready. Be warned however that Galaxy still has some quirks with standalone installers and you won't get update notifications for installers (just installed games), but it has improved in 1.2.x. 1.2.x will release publically either this week or next week.

While I agree the UI needs work (I'm done my fair share of complaining about it), simply complaining solves nothing. Constructive feedback is what is needed. Please report issues at: http://mantis.gog.com along with pics and your logs. Instructions are at the top of this thread.

Software like Galaxy is pretty complex and is not build overnight. It has come a long way since the early days and it has a lot further to go, but it's not 'horrible' by any means.

As I said above, unless something changes, it looks like this will be fixed at some point (either next patch or on release).

Yes, Galaxy 1.2.x has that option. To use it you'll have to opt into the preview updates in settings, or wait until 1.2.x is officially released out of beta which is supposed to be some time in April unless they have a reason to push it off a bit until November. :)

ohjay: Guess ill uninstall this useless to me program which seems barely functional , it seems to have no option to even notify me theres an update so i can do manual download that ive seen , bar visiting the website and manually checking each in turn
Yes, this is unfortunate but Galaxy either auto-updates installed games, or notifies that an installed game has an update with a blue circle on the game so it can be updated manually if auto-updates are disabled globally or per-game, however it does not have any mechanism to handle notification alerts that an owned and possibly uninstalled game has been updated from the downloadable installers/extras collection like the Downloader client formerly had. Unfortunately even the notifications in Downloader and on the website for notifying a game has an update don't work half the time at all anyway. My GOG Downloader for example shows a notification for 2 years now whether or not one actually exists and there's no way that I know of to get rid of it.

At the end of the day, the only way to do the closest to what we want at our own accord, is to follow the "What did just update" thread and manually update any games that we own that get updated in there. Alternatively some people use the gogrepo.py script that a forum member created with which to download and sync the entire library to keep it up to date. I can't speak for it from first hand experience but many people swear by it so it's an option.

Alas while I do think GOG will improve many aspects of Galaxy going forward, I don't think they'll ever provide a mechanism on the website or within Galaxy to replace the old update notifications system so we're more or less on our own for that likely. In fairness, I don't think any other sites that have standalone downloads have any kind of superior update notification system either so we're no worse in that department. :)

ohjay: Not to mention the interface sucks, take the van helsing series the names are cut of on the list as they are to long.

Yeah, there are a number of aspects of the user interface that leave a lot to be desired. I too hate how the left sidebar that shows installed games is at a fixed pixel width no matter what size or resolution of your monitor, thus cutting off the names of both games and downloads and making it ambiguous if two or more games or downloads have the same long name but some small difference at the end that doesn't show up due to using ellipsis truncation. I very much wish they had pursued a responsive design instead and scaled those user interface elements to the user's display. I personally hand hack the CSS files for Galaxy to increase the size of the sidebar by about 2 inches so the entire name of the game is visible on my 30" monitor, which more or less converts 2 inches of completely wasted space from the content area into something useful. :)

The ephemeral download queue is less than desireable as well, I hope they relegate that to a separate tab or content page so you can have it constantly visible without having to hover your mouse over it to keep an eye on downloads. It'd be nice to slide Galaxy onto a secondary display and keep an eye on the downloads along with a speed graph and other statistics about the download queue like other download applications provide such as Steam. I think they probably have plans to revamp all of that in the future likely though, and that what we have right there right now is just a placeholder to get the ball rolling. :)

avatar
ohjay: What a horrible program its been around how long now ?
It just needs some more time to mature and gain more features and stabilize, etc. A few iterations with customer feedback taken into consideration as well as other improvements etc. and it'll probably start to rock and roll. As it stands right now with 1.2.x, it's really starting to take shape overall minus a few caveats and inconveniences. There are definitely some things that irk me, but at least some of them I'm sure they'll address. Hopefully sooner than later. :)

It is good to discuss what we like/don't like, what's missing, what we'd like to see though. From that comes the fuel for future features etc. that might get implemented.

Some good ideas here (I wasn't sure at first exactly what ohjay was referring too), but yea it defiantly could scale better based on monitor size. The fixed width isn't ideal by any means. As we discussed before, also not a fan of the separate library view either which I think is really unneeded in Galaxy. They had plans in alpha/early beta to go the Steam route and include button to show all games (even those in the cloud) or installed only games all in the left hand bar. I think we should go back to that. Library view works good enough on the site but is a pain on the client when trying to find a certain game to install (though changing it now would probably cause people to bitch about it). At the very least you could include both. That or go the Origin route and make the library front and center when you log in not some separate page.

I also don't like that they lay black text on picture backgrounds. Some game cards are hard to read near the top if they have a dark picture as the background fades into grey. It's like nobody at GOG has heard of colored backgrounds. Turn opacity to 30% (give or take) and add some rectangular/rounded boxes with a dark background color around features like achievements, friends activity, etc with some padding. Similar to what Steam does, with an easy to read text color (like white).

I also think they really need to change how achievements and friends activity are laid out. I have 36 friends on Galaxy, If I for some reason want to go to a popular game like The Witcher 3 and show all achievements and friends activity, I have to scroll and scroll to see it all. Then top if it all off, if I want to hide it I have to click a new game page and then go back to the Witcher 3 because there is no HIDE ALL button. Doesn't make much sense. I need to be able to see this information but not in a way were I have to scroll and scroll to see it all. Default it to like 5 - 10 and use some pagination (arrows?) or something for friends activity. Achievements I would rather see laid out more like Steam, with a button to view all on the we hope to be coming soon profile feature.

The game setting's page could also use some re-organizing. Doing simple things like adding some more tabs and putting certain features in their own tabs (like the rollback feature). Either that or change it to a drop down menu with a submit button. Radio buttons generally don't look good, especially when you got like 5 vertically listed in a row.

As well as doing simple things like changing the case of words (ie Cloud saves -> Cloud Saves, View forum -> View Forum, etc.) I've said it a few times now. These aren't sentences, they are more titles than anything. A more conventional manner would be to capitalize all words.

And last but not least do something with the menu. At the very least make it (STORE, LIBRARY, COMMUNITY, SUPPORT) like it was at one time when it was accidently included in an early patch and was quickly removed. We were told the menu was going to be re-done and it never was. For one those don't need to be buried in a drop down, and it just looks better (and conforms to the site). Also remove GOG GALAXY under STORE, we are using Galaxy are we not? Other than, maybe go with a slightly better design, maybe make it look like the menu used on the site. That wouldn't look to bad.

I also really hate the GOG COM logo being used for a drop down menu. Not that I don't like GOG's logo but it is a pixelated/blurry mess on smaller sizes and once you notice it, it's hard not to see it every time I look at Galaxy. No other icon on my taskbar or desktop looks at bad as GOG's. We know were using Galaxy by GOG, I see it as unnecessary branding that we don't need. GOG I've noticed likes to stick their logo on stuff but it's really distracting. Valve doesn't stick Valve all over Steam do they? GOG Galaxy needs something to represent it like Steam's logo represents what it is. The best solution would be to have the designers design an actual Galaxy icon as a logo since it is called GOG Galaxy.

But yea I agree this I think was a nice placeholder during alpha/beta but now were talking release. And this WILL NOT cut it for a released version in it's current state. If you ask me 1.3 should consist of two major things, a UI refresh and a profile system (arguably that last big thing Galaxy needs) now that it has most of it's core features. Also none of this 1.5 years crap we seen with 1.2. Smaller focused updates should be the plan, a major update (v1.3.x, v1.4.x, etc.) should occur every 3 - 5 months. But honestly this could be done in 2 - 3 months.

I agree that community user profiles with privacy controls is one of the major lacking features currently which would be nice to see in the next major release after 1.2, or even some incremental release. Would like to see the overlay, screenshots, cloud saves fleshed out more and compatible with as many games as possible. I think the cloud saves in particular is a big selling feature for people to come to GOG especially if it is available on games that do not have this feature elsewhere, but I think GOG knows this already and I speculate that that is a part of their plan. It seems a no brainer with cloud saves on the top of the wishlist afterall, plus they already implemented it for some games so I think that shows what they're thinking.

I think another major feature missing after that, albeit one only a fraction of gamers would use but it is still powerful and in demand nowadays, is video streaming, both direct user to user, and the ability to potentially direct stream to services like Twitch/Youtube etc. There are of course 3rd party apps to do this, but the value-add is having such features built directly into their own app, just like screenshots, chat. Those too exist as 3rd party apps, but there's value having them in Galaxy.

After that, they should probably add GNU Hurd as a supported operating system and release Galaxy for Hurd.

Quite frankly what are we talking here? Our wishlist, achievements, game-play time, and owned games are all already stored in a database. Really all we're talking about is querying that information and displaying in a pretty fashion on a web page that is assigned to a user id. Someone that knows the system should literally be able to have a working version ready within a few weeks. Then maybe adding some cool stuff like background pictures, a bio section, etc. to allow some customization, maybe a comment section to leave notes, and a few privacy settings. Nothing that is all that time consuming.

They could literally have this done in a month or two...

Again I BEG you GOG, PLEASE put 1.3.x on the preview branch after 1.2.x is released (or when you start working on it if you haven't started yet) and allow us to receive preview builds on a weekly/bi-weekly or monthly update schedule. That way you get direct feedback as it is being developed, and not after it's done. Look at 1.2.x you are now scrambling to fix or add stuff that could have been known about with feedback had we gotten the build during development.

skeletonbow: My GOG Downloader for example shows a notification for 2 years now whether or not one actually exists and there's no way that I know of to get rid of it.
And I thought I was the only one. Still have a notification about two unread PM. Since the whole system does not exist anymore they will never go away. I once asked GOG about it but they could not help. So I just live with it. I still use it and prefer it.

Good idea. I second this.
