Ancient-Red-Dragon: The fact that they gave an award to the piece of crap Starfield proves that these awards have no credibility whatsoever and are totally invalid (which is typical for most other video game award events too).

StingingVelvet: I'd guess Xbox Game of the Year implies an Xbox (console) exclusive, so there wasn't a lot to choose from as far as I know. Also as disappointed as I was with Starfield it seems to do well among a certain type of gamer, namely ones who like grinding resources to build ships and outposts.
Yes, and it got the "Best Xbox game" award. Starfield did extremely well on Xbox, it is gearing up to be the best selling Xbox game this year, it did not get any PC awards. But Bethesda games have always sold more on conoles than on PC anyway.

I read somewhere that the sales of Xbox machines increased as well in the week Starfield came out with a little over 70%.
Is Baldur's Gate 3 really that good ?

( i heard that the 5th edition of D&D is too streamlined )

One could argue that in it's specific niche/genre, that really there hasn't been much competition for a while.

First and Second Editions are good. After that, it's D&D for Dummies.

Most Wanted Game - Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
They actually give awards for marketing and hype? So much for the "video games are art, dammit!" perspective...

To me it sounds like a logical choice since it got the "best XBox game of the year" award, especially considering XBox didn't get e.g. Baldur's Gate 3 yet that got so many other awards on other platforms and categories.

What would you have picked as the best 2023 game on XBox?

Other than being a good game, its good rating can possibly be attributed also to:

1. It made also non-RPG and non-D&D people interested, and they even seem to have liked it, even if it was their first D&D RPG game ever. Especially on PS5 I gather.

2. Larian has made statements and gestures that made gamers feel Larian is on their side and cares what the gamers think and want. A bit similar goodwill that I feel CDPR also enjoyed at least with The Witcher 3 or FromSoftware (Elden Ring) etc.

No microtransactions, no online live service, no dozens of separate (cosmetic) DLCs etc., the player doesn't get a feeling he is being milked dry.

I admit BG3 went under my radar for a long time because somehow I mistook it to the earlier BG1-BG2 enhanced editions, and I assumed Beamdog is doing BG3 too so I had quite lukewarm expectations, kind of "maybe I will buy and play it at some point if it is any good, as I have finished the first two BGs as well".

I admit I bought BG3 due to point 2. Yet to play the game.

Did the Xbox even really have any worthwhile exclusive titles released on that platform this year, other than maybe say Hi-Fi Rush?
