timppu: So... a medieval knight goes to a creepy old house run by a mad scientist, in order to find mystical treasures for his king, along with some missing high school students?

Sounds great! I'm in!
Here's the trailer
Just wanted to chime in also to say that without a DRM-free release the game would be ignored by a large number of users here.
welcome and good luck on your kickstarter project. And ya confirming that there will be drm free and ideally a gog release will help a lot to get attention here

StrandedSail: Yea I just spent like ten minutes trying to post the link and not realizing why it wasn't working. I don't get any results from a google search either, but it's my top result on a kickstarter search.
I just did the same thing, i was soo confused lol

zeogold: Edit: Oh, right, new accounts can't post links. Forgot about that. Ignore me.
Thank you for solving my frustrating mystery! ahha

P.S. Game looks pretty awesome but I have to wonder, 40k is a pretty big chuck of pocket change! Either way, I'll back you next pay check!

zeogold: Edit: I don't know much about game development, but....isn't hoping for $40,000 to develop the full game (all episodes) kinda...steep?

UnrealDelusion: Looks interesting plus you mentioned some of my favorite adventures back in the day and they still are today.
Although just like zeogold said $40.000 is a bit steep and not to meddle or anything since it's your project but
wouldn't it make more sense to make the $10.000 goal for episode 2 and the $40.000 for the mobile ports?

Anyway I hope you manage to get it on GOG if you reach you're goal and will keep an eye on your project.

I hope you do get to make the game you want to make and welcome to the GOG community :)
$40K is not steep. If anything, it's way too little.

One of the biggest problems with Kickstarter game development projects is that they run out of money and have to suspend or stop production on the game.

You have to ask for enough to pay people for their time. If you are not hiring full-time people to work on this game, then I am not backing you. And at the prices you are asking for, you will run out of funds well before you are done working on the game.

So, to reply to the questions about the funding amounts... we already have complete design documents of Episodes 1 and 2. We have development of episode 1 roughly 60% complete... that's why the goal to release the first two episodes is relatively low; we're nearly there. We would be working on Episode 3 and Episode 4 from scratch. We do have some freelance help, but for the most part we're working on it ourselves in our free time, whenever we can. The funding will be used to hire more artists or, if we get enough backing, to allow our artist to work full time. Please believe that the numbers are not arbitrary at all... I did a rough estimate of the number of assets we need to finish the current work, and the number we'd need to develop a new episode, and I multiplied by the average going rate of the many artists I've spoken with.

Regarding a DRM-free release, I've received quite a few requests about that and I think it's a great idea. I am planning on learning about releasing on GOG today and then updating the kickstarter page as soon as I'm educated.

You don't have to pay it all by yourself!

Unless you want to, of course.
I just submitted Rite of Passage to GOG for review. From what I've read, it seems as if they tend to take some time before replying to developers about accepting submissions. In any case, we are definitely offering DRM-free direct download of each episode upon release. I've updated the Kickstarter description and FAQ section to reflect this (I unfortunately can't update the reward text because we already have backers.)

Thanks everyone for the feedback

Fairfox: is his beard 'roto-scoped' (?) too?
Yes I suppose technically it is. The whole character is rotoscoped, and we did use an actor with facial hair matching the character design.
anyhoohar i suspect this lengthy (? x 2 )animation-station process precludes yooou bein' able to play a woman in teh gamie. unless maleness is, liek, really fo' realz integral too teh story regard less
At this point we only have our male protagonist in episodes 1 and 2, but if we receive enough interest and backing to extend the story into further episodes, it's entirely possible that we could feature a female main character, or even multiple main characters.

A word of warning, GOG is a curated store so you can't guarantee a GOG release. However there are plenty of other DRM-free stores that are more open, so a guaranteed DRM-free release *somewhere to be confirmed* would be welcome. Check out itch.io.
Yup I agree. We will definitely have a DRM-free release... itch.io was the second site I checked out after GOG
Totally revamped the page and the trailer, check it out: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2088193727/rite-of-passage
