All the computers at the factory still use XP or W98. I have one XP laptop which I only use for certain programs that dont work on linux or 7 or even Vista. I also run XP as virtual machines since we own a volume key for XP.

About linux, My next laptop will be linux and I will run Office in Virtual machines, probably W7 since Office 2013 doesnt like XP. And sadly because our Office documents (both word and Excel) mess up when opened with Libra or Open Office.

Try SoftMaker Office. There's a free (more limited) version, FreeOffice. Haven't had much use for an office suite for years, but when I used it (on Windows) it was both lighter and more compatible than Open/Libre.

No, he became a member on Gog. Owns about every game here. So in a way, you could say he's in heaven.

Thank you very much ET3D. I installed the free version from the site you suggested and installed it. Although it did a better job than both OO and LO, the equations and symbols still werent in correct places. If it were up to me I would be using it but we work in groups where everyone must use the same program and I dont think I can convince others to use this while both university and company are providing us with Office 2013 licence. Still thank you very much. I will keep it installed.

If you have time, try posting some feedback at their forum. SoftMaker is always working on improving compatibility.

I thought it was a dog too, it really looks like it thanks to the small picture and low quality.

edgar1: Also, somehow this Windows 7, thats supposed to use LESS resources from hardware is eating up MORE of them(almost all of my RAM anyway).
avatar
ET3D: The question is, how does it perform? Windows 7 caches a lot of data in RAM to (hopefully) speed things up, so would naturally use more RAM, but it frees that when it's needed for other things. In my experience on a PC with 512MB or 1GB of RAM Windows 7 works better, especially when coupled with ReadyBoost, a technology which isn't available in XP.
Well, I have 64-bit version of Win7 Ultimate and it eats up 3,5 GB RAM, out of 4 installed. Also, it loads up my Core 2 Duo 1.86 GHz to about 50%. (without steam or skype , just 7 Yes, you can laugh at my old processor, but its only one I have. It came with my desktop.). I havent noticed any speed up, compared to XP. If it accesses something faster through caching(steam game?), I havent seen it.

I certainly won't laugh at your old processor. I ran Windows 7 on a Pentium M 1.2GHz and 512MB/1GB of RAM. It functioned pretty well. Far as I remember Windows 7 normally just caches applications you use often so that when you run them they're supposed to start more quickly. 50% CPU used isn't normal. It means that there's a core running at 100%. What process is using this according to the task manager?
