Hmm, I think the best that NWN had to offer were the online worlds and communities that are probably either gone from the world or empty now and can no longer be experienced as they were. The single player campaigns aren't very special, I think.

for me they were. in nwn1 i fought everything from badgers to dragons yet i never encountered a monster so annoying as this tinye from real life.. :-/

The only problem with NWN is Act 1. it is way too long and way too monotonous. If you get through Act 1, you're aces.

Similar story here - turned 18 and discovered raves and partying... Thanks, it's encouraging to know it was not only me who struggled with this. I rage uninstalled it one night, which I've never done with any other game - I think it might be saved in the cloud thought as I played through my Origin Access subscription..

Recently bought a great Star Wars Humble Bundle pack with all the old Star Wars games. Completed Jedi Academy earlier this year, it was fantastic - I loved how delightfully wicked it made me feel when I close the path of the dark side! Currently playing through K.O.T.O.R just now. Yeah I do like first person action games. I have The Sabotuer although I haven't played it yet. I know about the Hitman and Far Cry games. Never heard of Hidden & Dangerous though so thanks I'll go digging for that one.

I recently purcahsed the first Syberia game after picking up Syberia 2 for free from Ubisoft - haven't tried them yet though. I'll look out for Divinty too thanks.

Also, I'd like to join the choir praising Trine. A great game indeed, and I like the sequel even more. The third game in the series was a huge letdown, but the first two are great, and entirely self contained.

I got Prince of Persia: Sands of Time for free from Ubisoft - completely forgot about it - must make a start is it in the near future. Also picked up the remastered Grim Fandango last month. Again - trying to finish the other 6 games I'm currently juggling at the minute before I can start anything else. Thanks for your input.

There's quite a bit of overlap between our favourites, these in particular I love: With that in mind, here are some suggestions:

The Thief series
Easily some of the most tense, atmospheric, frightening games you'll ever have the pleasure of experiencing. The graphics are somewhat dated, yet they still manage to OOZE that "Name Of The Rose"-like dark, murky, medieval feeling. The sound design, to this day, is pretty much second to none. The first two games use the same engine as System Shock 2 and some of the gameplay elements are surprisingly similar. One might even argue that Shock 2 is more or less a cyberpunk reskin of Thief, with some RPG elements added on top, but Thief's gameplay is much more focused on being stealthy. In fact, the stealth mechanics in the first two Thief titles are pretty much unmached by any other game to this day. Nothing can beat the adrenaline rush of hiding in some shadowy corner while hammer-wielding crusaders are out for your blood. You want scary? Play Thief.

The Hitman series
While not as tense as Thief, these are still some grade-A action games. Lots of different ways to go about your objectives. Excellent level design. Be aware that the first game feels more like a very rough proof-of-concept demo in comparison to the two excellent sequels (it does have some nice touches of dark humour in the form of cheesy one-liners that the rest of the series mostly lacked). Part 2 is where the series really came into its own, refining all of the first game's gameplay elements. Contracts is a nightmare-fueled retelling of the first game, I consider it one of the most atmospheric games I've ever played.

Kingpin - Life Of Crime
Severely underrated FPS gem with graphics that still look surprisingly nice today, great sound design and a quite remarkable AI (while Half-Life's highly praised AI mostly succeeded in ways to get stuck in the level architecture, Kingpin's NPCs can jump, duck, crawl through vents, climb up ladders,...) Don't play this like your average shooter, keep your weapon holstered unless you're attacked first and be friendly towards the NPCs, chances are you'll live longer.


There's lots of more great games to suggest (the years from 1997-2000 were pretty much the golden age of PC gaming), but the Thief series alone should last you for a while. :D
