blotunga: Neverwinter Nights
Hmm, I think the best that NWN had to offer were the online worlds and communities that are probably either gone from the world or empty now and can no longer be experienced as they were. The single player campaigns aren't very special, I think.

for me they were. in nwn1 i fought everything from badgers to dragons yet i never encountered a monster so annoying as this tinye from real life.. :-/
The only problem with NWN is Act 1. it is way too long and way too monotonous. If you get through Act 1, you're aces.

tinyE: I stopped gaming from 96 - 2006 in favor of drinking. In 2006 I gave up drinking and when back to gaming.

Still think that give up drinking might be the dumbest thing I've ever done. :Ping
Similar story here - turned 18 and discovered raves and partying...

heartburnron: ... I did start playing Dragon Age Origins but gave up in frustration after around 10 hours as I totally suck at the combat! I'm new to the turn based/strategic style combat and find it quite frustrating. I must go back to DAO though as I was really enjoying the story...
avatar
Falci: I had similar problems with DAO. Every time I started a quest line, I'd be stuck somewhere in the middle of it, because of horrible difficulty spikes. I distinctly remember having to travel the world map without Leliana in the group because a "random battle" from her personal quest line kept happening and I kept being utterly destroyed by it. That and a lot other similar episodes made me quit it for quite sometime. Truth is, you have to keep changing the active questline whenever you hit said difficulty spikes and slowly leveling up your characters until you finally break through one or more of these difficult battles. As you build levels, the difficulty spikes will start melting away and you'll be able to progress more consistently.

Hell, in the end, I even managed to kill all secret bosses. And some of them are insanely difficult. Which, in turn, made the final boss a breeze.
Thanks, it's encouraging to know it was not only me who struggled with this. I rage uninstalled it one night, which I've never done with any other game - I think it might be saved in the cloud thought as I played through my Origin Access subscription..

Wishbone: Here is a whole bunch of GOG games I recommend you at least look at to see if you might find them interesting:

....

And a few you might look into that are not on GOG and have not been mentioned:

GTA: Vice City
GTA: San Andreas
GTA V
Minecraft
Thanks for those, I'll check them out - completed GTA V recently - my first GTA experience and it was awesome!

are you out of your mind? :O why you talk to tinye! you want to end up like breja? i didn't have a real good opinion about him but he was rather normal - that's until he became friends with tinye and now he's like a zombie following each command from him! i don't understand this phenomenon - it's like the troll army of pewdiepie! it's CRAZY!

Lemon_Curry: I took a hiatus from gaming during almost the exact same period.

I highly recommend getting Deadly Premonition: Director's Cut which is currently on sale at its standard whopping 90% discount.

Never mind the bugs... it's a bloody fantastic experience that's not to be missed!

Other recommendations:
...
SOLD! Just bought Deadly Premonition - sounds like my kind of game. Thanks!!

Recently bought a great Star Wars Humble Bundle pack with all the old Star Wars games. Completed Jedi Academy earlier this year, it was fantastic - I loved how delightfully wicked it made me feel when I close the path of the dark side! Currently playing through K.O.T.O.R just now. Thanks for the other suggestions too...

Breja: If you liked Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb and Blood Rayne, I thinke there is a good chance you'll like The Saboteur. Plenty of killing and blowing up nazis in a very stylish action-adventure movie type way. It starts off slow, the first hour is a very boring, over long tutorial, but after that hour it becomes incredibly fun.

Knights of the Old Republic and it's sequel are must plays if you like RPGs, especially since you liked Mass Effect, and Mass Effect was pretty much a follow-up to KotOR in a new universe. There are also th Drakensang games which I love dearly and think are far superior to Dragon Age, but they are likely not nearly as accesible, you feel the pen&paper basis strongly in those.

Since you liked Fear, you may want to check out Republic Commando. I know, it's not a horror, but it's great tactical FPS.

Some other games I think are great but have no idea if you'd like them
TRON 2.0- in my opinion the best FPS ever. The world is unique, the level design is great, the story is fun (even better if you like the original movie), and the disk is a super fun weapon (and there's plenty of other, highly modify-able weapons)

Hand of Fate- part choose you own adventure RPG, part action game, part collectible card game, it's not quite like anything else I know, and it's one of my favourite games of the last couple of years. Great, unique fun on many levels.

Bard's Tale (the 2004 one)- great parody of RPG and heroic fantasy tropes. And songs! Plenty of hilarious songs, about how much it sucks to be the chosen one and other such stuff. The gamplay itself is simplistic, but the story and the humor make up for it in spades.

Armed & Dangerous- speaking about humor, this is probably the funniest game I ever played, and a good third person shooter too. Great cast of characters, great writing and weapons you won't find anywhere else (land shark launcher!). I can't recommend it enough.
Thanks Breja. They all sound pretty cool - I'll look out for them...

Luned: Trine---the platformer for people who don't usually like platformers. A storyline, nice graphics and music, and a lot of fun to play. Not too twitchy and oh-so-satisfying when you get those boxes and planks placed juuust right, or you time Zoya's swing perfectly!
Used to love platform gaming back in the 8 and 16 bit console days... I'll look this one up thanks.

The-Business: Someone likes first person action games? Take a look at

Far Cry 1 (can't link it because it's blocked for people in Germany)
Hitman 2: Silent Assassin (epicly told stealth killing, but can also be played with guns blazing)
Hidden & Dangerous 2
The Saboteur
Yeah I do like first person action games. I have The Sabotuer although I haven't played it yet. I know about the Hitman and Far Cry games. Never heard of Hidden & Dangerous though so thanks I'll go digging for that one.

Good call Luned.

greeklover: Since you like adventures maybe you would enjoy Syberia.

I also agree with the poster who suggested Baldur's Gate, Planescape Torment, etc.

You could have a look at the Divinity stuff, too
I recently purcahsed the first Syberia game after picking up Syberia 2 for free from Ubisoft - haven't tried them yet though. I'll look out for Divinty too thanks.

Don't worry about ciomalau, he's a well known troll. And not even a good one. He'll get banned tomorrow, or maybe on thursday, when the mod gets back to work.

Also, I'd like to join the choir praising Trine. A great game indeed, and I like the sequel even more. The third game in the series was a huge letdown, but the first two are great, and entirely self contained.

I got Prince of Persia: Sands of Time for free from Ubisoft - completely forgot about it - must make a start is it in the near future. Also picked up the remastered Grim Fandango last month. Again - trying to finish the other 6 games I'm currently juggling at the minute before I can start anything else. Thanks for your input.

hm? so why should i get banned jerk? i didn't say a single offensive word. punks like you called fable moderator when i had that title with the f-word but when tinye uses both words like "fucking" and "bullshit" in his title that's perfectly ok? moderation came to this forum only because of problems started by tinye and his butt buddies like you - tinye trolls me, i react, then he stays silent and gets mad EACH AND EVERY TIME... and even now when moderation exists, you twist moderation to your own likes. you just a patethic scum you use fable moderator like your own mother "mamaaaa! ciomalau annoys meeee! let's ban him already! let's kill him! KILL HIM NOW! NOOW! NOOOOW!" :D stupid jerk
There's quite a bit of overlap between our favourites, these in particular I love:

heartburnron: System Shock 1 & 2
Deus Ex (Original)
Postal 2
S.T.A.L.K.E.R games
The Saboteur
With that in mind, here are some suggestions:

The Thief series
Easily some of the most tense, atmospheric, frightening games you'll ever have the pleasure of experiencing. The graphics are somewhat dated, yet they still manage to OOZE that "Name Of The Rose"-like dark, murky, medieval feeling. The sound design, to this day, is pretty much second to none. The first two games use the same engine as System Shock 2 and some of the gameplay elements are surprisingly similar. One might even argue that Shock 2 is more or less a cyberpunk reskin of Thief, with some RPG elements added on top, but Thief's gameplay is much more focused on being stealthy. In fact, the stealth mechanics in the first two Thief titles are pretty much unmached by any other game to this day. Nothing can beat the adrenaline rush of hiding in some shadowy corner while hammer-wielding crusaders are out for your blood. You want scary? Play Thief.

The Hitman series
While not as tense as Thief, these are still some grade-A action games. Lots of different ways to go about your objectives. Excellent level design. Be aware that the first game feels more like a very rough proof-of-concept demo in comparison to the two excellent sequels (it does have some nice touches of dark humour in the form of cheesy one-liners that the rest of the series mostly lacked). Part 2 is where the series really came into its own, refining all of the first game's gameplay elements. Contracts is a nightmare-fueled retelling of the first game, I consider it one of the most atmospheric games I've ever played.

Kingpin - Life Of Crime
Severely underrated FPS gem with graphics that still look surprisingly nice today, great sound design and a quite remarkable AI (while Half-Life's highly praised AI mostly succeeded in ways to get stuck in the level architecture, Kingpin's NPCs can jump, duck, crawl through vents, climb up ladders,...) Don't play this like your average shooter, keep your weapon holstered unless you're attacked first and be friendly towards the NPCs, chances are you'll live longer.

There's lots of more great games to suggest (the years from 1997-2000 were pretty much the golden age of PC gaming), but the Thief series alone should last you for a while. :D
