Ex Vitro

A true Super Metroid clone for the PC. It's quite simple but I like it a lot, the atmosphere is awesome. Unfortunately it's not finished but the 0.35 beta works just fine aside from a 30FPS limit.
Nine months without new Metroidvania suggestions? Apparantly a new one was born in the meantime and it's free (it's highly rated on Desura, but I haven't checked it out myself yet):

Project Adventure Game
I didn't exactly browse through all three pages of this thread, but since searching for it got me 0 results, I'm going to recommend

Akuji The Demon
I can wholeheartedly recommend Risk of Rain.

Its an extremely fun game, hard and unforgiving, but still fun.

And then there's the coop mode!

Addictive stuff, beware.

4$ in a sale, and tbh its the most fun I've had while playing a game for some time.

Also, its great to pick up and play, tastes great in short sessions.

...and I still havent managed to unlock any new classes..

Has anyone played Magicians and Looters? I'm curious whether it's worth spending 4 EUR on. The reviewers on Desura are praising it, as if it's one of the best Metroidvanias out there, but then again the audience on Desura is very niche, I guess. (Also, has this already been in some bundle I didn't buy or on IndieGameStand? It looks vaguely familiar.)

Although anyone thinking of buying Dark Matter should research it first. Reportedly it was removed from GOG for good reason.

Yeah, good point, I did bump the GOG release thread asking whether it had been fixed, but should have also made a note here.
There's a good list at TvTropes.
Since this thread now lies under a death sentence, let's save it with a link to the Axiom Verge thread:

Also, here's one you'll have to seek elsewhere: http://www.gog.com/forum/general/gog_rejected_the_kickass_indie_metroidvania_rex_rocket

Recent ones people recommend?
Hmm, I've not played any recent ones recently.

But, Treasure Adventure World wasn't out 5 years ago when this was last posted in. It's a remake of Treasure Adventure Game which was completely excellent (and free). I actually prefer the art style of TAG, but I highly recommend playing whichever version appeals more.
Well, there's:
* Hollow Knight, a pretty challenging one that's not as linear as most. (One thing I don't like, however, is the penalty for dying, especially coming from Celeste (which is not a metroidvania or roguelike).)
* Timespinner, which is very much in the style of the GBA and DS Castlevania games. (Also, Bloodstained, but I haven't played it.)
* As for Roguelikes, there's Tangledeep, which is interesting in that it borrows some elements of games like Final Fantasy Tactics and Disgaea (though not Disgaea's level cap), but puts them in a different genre.

Niggles: Recent ones people recommend?
From the last 5~6 years?
I didn't play many from these genres, but the ones I played and enjoyed were:

Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon (metroidvania)
Minoria (Metroidvania, souls-like, RPG)
Momodora: Reverie Under The Moonlight (metroidvania)
Rabi-Ribi (metroidvania, bullet hell)
Shantae: Half-Genie Hero Ultimate Edition (metroidvania)
Downwell (roguelike)
You could look at the homebrew games, CastlevaniaRL (Serenade of chaos)... I tried it years ago and found it difficult, though if you survive the first night it's a lot easier. Very much in the same vein as DoomRL where you level up and get new feats/abilities.

But it's been years since i touched this. Can't hurt to try right?
