What possible harm can one crazy, mutant tentacle do?

Day of the Tentacle, the grand return of the grandest adventure of all, is available for pre-order now, only on GOG.com with a 10% discount for the first two weeks!

A crazy mutant tentacle is on the loose, plotting to take over the world. How you ask? That's not important right now! We need to be thinking about the how, just how are we going to fix this? Super simply, by going back to yesterday!

Alongside Grim Fandango, Monkey Island, Sam & Max, and Full Throttle, Day of the Tentacle sits without question among the legendary golden-era adventures. Now, straight from the early '90s, Day of the Tentacle arrives in our dystopian future of 2016 — back for a blast from the past for those who missed it, and a shot of nostalgia for those who just miss it.

Day of the Tentacle Remastered is all the adventure you may remember with an optional layer of sweet improvements on top. You can mix and match between the unmistakably 1990s pixely art and a fresh high-res coat of paint, remastered audio, and an all new interface. There are extra goodies in the Remastered release as well, including in-game developer commentary and a fully playable version of the original Maniac Mansion. Your pre-order also comes with three exclusive Day of the Tentacle wallpapers, available right away to fuel your anticipation.

But don't take our word for it. Take it from the guy behind it all:

Welcome back to the Day of the Tentacle, available for pre-order now, exclusively on GOG.com! The pre-order discount will last for two weeks, until March 22, 8:59 PM GMT.

greams: Nope!
I don't want to judge but this look like they've taken some HQ filter from SCUMMVM and just use it adding few brushes here and there... I'm gonna pass on those 15$
Here's why - SCUMMVM screenshot:
That's why the original graphics are there right?
Too bad, no Linux version -> no purchase.
Great , thanks!
Hope that this remake will turn out better than others Schafer's attempts.

Sabin_Stargem: I like remasters: It gives future generations the opportunity to play classic games, without having to bother with technical issues or putting up with badly aging aesthetics and controls.
It gives the current generation the opportunity to play it. For future generations it may look different. I'm quite sure you still will be able to run the original game in a DOS or SCUMMVM emulator in 20 years. But I would not bet that you will be able to run the remastered version so easily or at all in 20 years.

I don't have anything against remastered versions. But it makes me mad when publishers bury the original version of a game with such a release and make the original version legally inaccessible that way.

Because keeping the DOS or SCUMMVM version of a game available is the best way to ensure that future generations will still be able to enjoy the game, even in 20 or more years.
seeing this frontpage made me smile.

Has anyone asked Tim Schafer why the original version of the game is not available anymore? And if so, has the question been answered?

This.

As far as I know there was not such question yet. But I guess it wouldn't make sense. Disney owns rights to classic version. If Doublefine wants to sell it they would have to pay to Disney for that more than just for making remaster. On the other hand I cannot see how Doublefine would pay to Disney for making remaster - if Disney was allowed to sell classic version crippling possible Doublefine incomes from remaster.

Positive: The graphics look great. They show full repsect for the original source material while at the same time developing them along the background of their respective characters. Amazing job there. Still, I won't pre-order because Double Fine needs to fix their old projects before releasing new ones. QA!

While I would love to play this, I have to pass this opportunity. Besides Labyrinth the original Maniac Mansion games are the only LucasArts adventures which I don't own. And I haven't been able to find copies of those games yet.

Unfortunately I don't buy adventure games unless I can buy the entire series, because besides playing I like collecting things. For me playing the game inside a game in a classic mode isn't the same thing as playing the original version 1987 version of the Maniac Mansion.
does this pre-order include the original version of the games?
Great to see it here! Will buy it at some point.
From what I read you can go back and forth between the remastered and the original and I have no qualms about that. Luckily for me I own all LucasArts originals except Fangdango on CD, but glad to pick up whatever I can from LuasArts digitally, I would have to jerry rig my originals and I do not have a lot of time on my hands to do it. Thank you GOG for getting these classics.:)

From what I read you can alternate between original and remastered as you wish so I am thinking you will not get the original or the remastered separate in your library.

I agree and even though I do have the CD version I will still play it because it will be hell getting it to run on a modern PC. There are not too many copies floating around and if you can acquire one it might cost you.

Pherim: I don't get it... with the Monkey Island Special Editions people complained that the new graphics were too far from the originals (which is true for the first one, but in my opinion they were a lot better in the second) and now in DOTT they are EXACTLY like the originals, just in HD, and people still complain? Really, I love the way it looks, and who doesn't like it can switch to the original graphics any time.

I'm really looking forward to this one!
Like I said earlier in the thread, one probable reason for complaints is the loss of perceived detail when you go from low-res pixel art to high-res line art. The low-res art implies extra detail. The high-res art makes it obvious there's no extra detail. It's a subtle difference, but the lack of implied detail can make high-res art look sterile and simplistic even though all the shapes and colors are the same.

I think they made the right choice here of flawlessly smoothing out the art without altering the original intent. They could have added extra detail and taken more liberties with the layout, but that guarantees it will look different from the original and risks turning out worse. Just like voice acting and music, art direction was an important part of classic point-and-click adventures. Tampering too much with anything that isn't broken risks breaking it.
Well color me excited. And it comes with Maniac Mansion too?!?! Whatever the format, I've been waiting a long time to see both of these on gog.com

This is a good day. (For the record, I got Broken Age as a freebie during a promo on here and it turned out to be amazing. So Doublefine is okay in my book.)
