What possible harm can one crazy, mutant tentacle do?

Day of the Tentacle, the grand return of the grandest adventure of all, is available for pre-order now, only on GOG.com with a 10% discount for the first two weeks!

A crazy mutant tentacle is on the loose, plotting to take over the world. How you ask? That's not important right now! We need to be thinking about the how, just how are we going to fix this? Super simply, by going back to yesterday!

Alongside Grim Fandango, Monkey Island, Sam & Max, and Full Throttle, Day of the Tentacle sits without question among the legendary golden-era adventures. Now, straight from the early '90s, Day of the Tentacle arrives in our dystopian future of 2016 — back for a blast from the past for those who missed it, and a shot of nostalgia for those who just miss it.

Day of the Tentacle Remastered is all the adventure you may remember with an optional layer of sweet improvements on top. You can mix and match between the unmistakably 1990s pixely art and a fresh high-res coat of paint, remastered audio, and an all new interface. There are extra goodies in the Remastered release as well, including in-game developer commentary and a fully playable version of the original Maniac Mansion. Your pre-order also comes with three exclusive Day of the Tentacle wallpapers, available right away to fuel your anticipation.

But don't take our word for it. Take it from the guy behind it all:

Welcome back to the Day of the Tentacle, available for pre-order now, exclusively on GOG.com! The pre-order discount will last for two weeks, until March 22, 8:59 PM GMT.

Yes!!! YEs yes yes!!! This is how you do a remaster!!! Give it all the love and remastering you want, but also allow it to be experienced "untouched" and original! I'm so excited! Full Throttle next!!!!

puffyjrkfan: Well color me excited. And it comes with Maniac Mansion too?!?! Whatever the format, I've been waiting a long time to see both of these on gog.com

This is a good day. (For the record, I got Broken Age as a freebie during a promo on here and it turned out to be amazing. So Doublefine is okay in my book.)
It doesn't come with Maniac Mansion, they just have it running in an emulator at some point in the game.
Wait, so the original Maniac Mansion isn't included as a separate game? It's just included as a sort of "Easter egg" within DoTT?

I also wish these (Grim Fandango as well) would come with the original game as well as the remaster as separate games. Like how Pathalogic and System Shock 1 come with the original and the enhanced as separate games.
Doesn't look like we will get the classic version. Shame! I'll stick to ScummVM and wait for a nice, big sale.

Indeed, this is how it was with the original release. Doesn't appear they will change it. Shame.
I don't see any meaningful added value to the original CD version so I'll skip it, but I'm really glad to see a re-release of such a great game! I find it ironic that a lot of people are complaining about not being able to play the original version, even though the description clearly states that you can toggle between versions, but I agree that it's a shame for those that don't have Windows.

Speaking of versions, am I correct to assume that the Maniac Mansion included in this remaster is the exact same one that was included with the original DotT without any enhancements?

I remember it being included as a game within a game, but when I read the description for this I took it as it would be included as a separate game file/download. What a bummer.
DOTT!
It's really disappointing that these "remasters" seem to prevent us from getting the original DOS games.

You could play Maniac Mansion independently of DOTT in the old version; it was its own folder under the DOTT directory, with its own executable. Don't know how they're handling it here.

OlausPetrus: While I would love to play this, I have to pass this opportunity. Besides Labyrinth the original Maniac Mansion games are the only LucasArts adventures which I don't own. And I haven't been able to find copies of those games yet.

Unfortunately I don't buy adventure games unless I can buy the entire series, because besides playing I like collecting things. For me playing the game inside a game in a classic mode isn't the same thing as playing the original version 1987 version of the Maniac Mansion.
You don't have to. You can play the Maniac Mansion included in the original DOTT in ScummVM. It's in the game files. So if you have a copy of the original DOTT, you also have a standalone copy of Maniac Mansion.

eiii: Has anyone asked Tim Schafer why the original version of the game is not available anymore? And if so, has the question been answered?
avatar
tburger: This.

As far as I know there was not such question yet. But I guess it wouldn't make sense. Disney owns rights to classic version. If Doublefine wants to sell it they would have to pay to Disney for that more than just for making remaster. On the other hand I cannot see how Doublefine would pay to Disney for making remaster - if Disney was allowed to sell classic version crippling possible Doublefine incomes from remaster.
question asked. i don't expect to get a reply.

Me neither, but thx anyway.

Wow, how did I never notice that? Thanks, now I'll be up all night.

goggog11: Too bad, no Linux version -> no purchase.
Seems like one is coming, just not at release.
