What possible harm can one crazy, mutant tentacle do?

Day of the Tentacle, the grand return of the grandest adventure of all, is available for pre-order now, only on GOG.com with a 10% discount for the first two weeks!

A crazy mutant tentacle is on the loose, plotting to take over the world. How you ask? That's not important right now! We need to be thinking about the how, just how are we going to fix this? Super simply, by going back to yesterday!

Alongside Grim Fandango, Monkey Island, Sam & Max, and Full Throttle, Day of the Tentacle sits without question among the legendary golden-era adventures. Now, straight from the early '90s, Day of the Tentacle arrives in our dystopian future of 2016 — back for a blast from the past for those who missed it, and a shot of nostalgia for those who just miss it.

Day of the Tentacle Remastered is all the adventure you may remember with an optional layer of sweet improvements on top. You can mix and match between the unmistakably 1990s pixely art and a fresh high-res coat of paint, remastered audio, and an all new interface. There are extra goodies in the Remastered release as well, including in-game developer commentary and a fully playable version of the original Maniac Mansion. Your pre-order also comes with three exclusive Day of the Tentacle wallpapers, available right away to fuel your anticipation.

But don't take our word for it. Take it from the guy behind it all:

Welcome back to the Day of the Tentacle, available for pre-order now, exclusively on GOG.com! The pre-order discount will last for two weeks, until March 22, 8:59 PM GMT.

To me as well and i'm under the impression that for many people (judging from this thread) - but strangely enough - Tim wasn't asked about this yesterday...

my guess is - and going from the replies i've seen - he has been asked. it's just not something he's worried about. as he says: "you can play the original in this remaster."

my other guess is: there's more money for him here with the remakes. they will never release the originals [unless disney does something he doesn't vet] so, he's not nearly that interested in dealing with the issue.

I'm perfectly fine with it - it's his money, his business, he calls the shots...I'm just a bit old fashioned and would prefer simple 'No, you cannot play original version as a separate game as it's not included' . But that's just me.

OlausPetrus: Actually I have more games than I have time to play in the near future, so I can be picky. I like to play games in the correct order. I have no interest to play sequels unless I have completed the previous games first or to play remakes unless I have played the original version, so that I can fully appreciate the changes.

I want the full experience and knowing that I'm missing something takes away part of my enjoyment. In a similar manner I don't like to watch movie sequels or remakes unless I have seen the previous films. And I don't start watching TV-series from the middle of the season, but instead I rather wait that the series appears to Netflix if I have missed the first episode(s).
Oh, I get not wanting to watch or play things out of order. But not wanting to get the beginning of a series unless you can get the end of it at the exact same time seems strange, especially with older stuff that is hard to find. It seems to me you could eventually have a complete collection by getting the parts you can when you can, but not wanting to get any parts unless it is all of them simultaneously seems like a guarantee that you will never get any of them.

Anyway, I just thought it was odd, but it's not my place to dictate how you buy games. I hope you do get and play them one day though, because they're great games, and an important part of gaming history.

I don't necessarily buy the entire series simultaneously, but I usually start collecting something when I have discovered the parts which are most difficult to acquire. In this particular case the remastered version is easily available for the foreseeable future, so I can buy it any time I want once I have bought the other parts.

i am in this boat too. i do find it odd that he's willing to leave money out on the table like that. seems like it'd be a no-brainer to me. [to get both versions. there are different audiences who certainly appreciate different things, here.]

for what it's worth and if it makes your buying decision any simpler: maniac mansion is actually /inside/ this game. you don't have to play very far into it to find it either. if worst comes to the worst, i'm sure some kind soul will lend you a save game [assuming tim's not obfuscating where the save game data resides] at exactly the point where you could start up dott, skip the opening sequence, hit the restore key and start maniac mansion right away.

Day of the tentacle is awesome and all, but after the Grim fandango remastered fiasco I think I'm gonna wait for a bug free version at a sale price...
avatar
seppelfred: But you can also play it with the old graphics. Haven't you watched the video?
avatar
darthspudius: *face palm* I know that... it appears others don't.
avatar
Impaler26: I'd prefer to get the original version too. This is just another pointless "remastered" version IMO and i just hope it won't be as buggy as Grim Fandango.

But at least i still have the original CD version so i'm not buying this "remastered" version anyway. :D
avatar
darthspudius: It is far from pointless. The only people that find this pointless are the over entitled old game snobs who want the "original" version with everything.
Sure, "the only people".
avatar
ZaineH: A wishlist entry already exists for the non-remastered edition if someone wants to vote for that.
Thanks - upvoted!

l3l3l5l: This remake art is a joke. Even if they did hire the original talent, that only means the original talent didn't bother to learn how to draw on a computer in 23 years.
avatar
SHODANFreeman: They specifically said they wanted to keep the art looking as much like the original game's art as they could. I fail to see how exactly you believe that they haven't accomplished that.
I give up. More than a dozen people in this thread think the new art "looks almost perfect" and "is very close to the original". I fail to recognize both of these statements and still think "not even close" about both.

There appears to be a market for this type of thing, though. Hope you enjoy the new game as much as I did enjoy the original back in a day. Cheers!

I'm curious what this fiasco is you've mentioned. A few others have also mentioned bugs and what-not, so I'm fascinated and puzzled what the reasons are.

vicklemos: CRAPTACULAR NEWS: showed this pre-order to a (now dude I once knew) "friend" of mine and he "nah man, I won't even check it, have tons of HENTAI games"

I just lost my faith, all of it.
Worse, just googled hentai + tentacles. I... I didn't even know...

Why god, why? ;(
You could google for goatse and tubgirl, while you're at it.

One of those seemed to be solved by playing in original mode which makes me think some of the bugs have to do with the remastered mode. Though to be fair, I never played the game when it came out originally so i'm not familiar with it enough to know about any bugs that may or may not have been in the original. Also to be fair, I still have yet to play my copy of the new version myself as I was waiting to see if we'd get more bugfixes.

That said, i'm personally probably still going to pre-order DOTT, though i'm doing so with caution and will be keeping that 30 day refund option very close to hand.
for someone who does not know this game "day of the tentacle" surely sounds like some weird japanese anime game

Grargar: Welcome to the internet.
As a kid, I loved the NES/Famicom game "Nuts & Milk". Played tons of times, fun and addictive game.
Until... someone online (like 15yrs ago) said to me "hey, that's a great title for a porn movie"

;(

Dude I googled some common things once and google images showed me something related to an STD, like a "sick" female genitalia and... damn that was nasty.
Nasty!
