Noctropolis, a FMV adventure game about living out your comic book nightmares, is available now DRM-free on GOG.com with GOG Galaxy achievements and a 50% launch discount.

It's closing time at the bookstore. In the dimly-lit room, a strange figure lurks crouched on the creaky floor. It's the owner, Peter Grey. Suddenly, he leaps over the counter, dashes across the room, then throws a hefty cooking tome on an unsuspecting table lamp. BANG! The store goes completely dark - another successful mission for "Darksheer". But when Peter gets magically sucked inside his hero's comic-book world, he quickly realises darkness can be as perilous as it is alluring.

The legendary Darksheer has gone missing and now Peter must don the cape of his idol and clean up the everdark streets of Noctropolis in his place. For in the persistent shadows an evil plot is unfolding, threatening to consume this city of eternal darkness. Thankfully, what Peter lacks in KAPOW! he makes up for in *lightbulb* as he sets out to point, click, and talk his way to the truth. And maybe, eventually, back to the real world.

This version of the game comes with improved mouse and keyboard support, gameplay enhancements which remove dead-ends, plus numerous technical fixes. It also includes a remastered in-game soundtrack and a downloadable copy of the original Comic Book!

Open the latest issue and venture into the ominous streets of Noctropolis, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 50% discount will last until January 26, 1:59 PM GMT.
I thought this was an obscure game, I remember enjoying it but I never saw it mentioned anywhere.
In a world... where I wishlist this title :D
high rated
A few words (I was the dev on this for NDS):
Yes, this is a native build of the game. It was ported from the original assembly code into modern C++ and redone to render through OpenGL. It's very portable and Mac & Linux builds have been a goal since the get-go but our resources are thin. I was on the Turok project from September to January, hence the delay getting this out.

As far as things changed from the DOS version, there's really only one game play situation that was altered, and since speculation has continued to buzz around it since the original launch, I'll go ahead and explain what it was.

In the original game, you could skip picking up the glass shard in the bucket at Sunspire and another one would be provided to you from the broken beaker after escaping Macabre in the maze. However, what Flashpoint forgot to also do was provide an alternate means to get the Make-Up Kit item, which you normally find in the Opera House. Because there's no seeming reason to get it and it's an unassuming item, you might easily just skip it. Problem is if you saved over your save at the Opera, you'd now find yourself trapped in the maze with no items which the unfortunate soul at the end will accept (he will kill you no matter what else you try to give him).

After confirming this was unintentional, I added the ability to acquire the make-up kit from a location in the maze. See if you can find it, I won't spoil it. It won't be there if you already got the one in the opera house, and it's also invisible - you need to rummage around in a certain area to find it by accident.
YAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Finally!!!!!!

One of the best adventure games! thank the snow!

This is a nice game. But it's sad to see another release which screws up old compatibilities and they do not even deliver the original version as an add-on.

airnmusic: Interesting, never heard of this one but it looks like something I´d like.

Is it anyway similar to Phantasmagoria and stuff like that? Gameplay-wise, I mean.
Phantasmagoria is an easy-cake adventure in my opinion. There's no challenge to it and the story is just mediocre relying on shock value (but hey, Phantasmagoria is still enjoyable, just nothing to "write home about.")

Noctropolis has lots and lots of locations, items, characters, and a very interesting story and is waayyyyyyyyyy better than Phantasmagoria (and most other adventure games), imo.

I have no idea how back in the day it didn't get more notice, while things like Phantasmagoria and Tex Muprhy did. I can only imagine it was marketing, because this beats ANY Tex Murphy game in its greatness too.

haleyjd: It's very portable
Can you port it to Windows XP? Thanks in advance.
Hell YES!!! One of my all-time favorite games! It's about time!! Instant buy -- and at a very sweet price!!
Is this the same Night Dive Studios release that I purchased last September on Steam? It was an instabuy game. Too bad it didn't come to GOG sooner. Well for GOG that is...
Is it okay if I question the qualities of this FMV game and what makes it so great?

Incidentally, what was the rat in the maze for?

well, read some things, I suggest. I've touted it for quite a while on here, pretty much repeating the same things.

It's got pretty much all of the great qualities an adventure game can have in my opinion. They are:

It's unique in varying degrees (you've never played anything like it.) It's dark, it's funny, it has a great color palette with hand-drawn images on every screen. Each screen has special attention given to its detail. Each location is meaningful and there are no "filler" areas and they all give their own feel/ambiance that when added together, give the entire world its own flavor that is very-well rounded and developed. It was made with love! There's good music, good voice acting, good acting in general, (nothing great, but, hell, way better than most FMV games out there.) The puzzles are very good, not too easy, not too hard, not nonsensical. There's lots of item accumulation and interactions. Lots of "investigating to figure out what to do." There are many characters, and each of them is done well and are unique (from each other, from anything you've seen before.) The main antagonist is one of my favorites ever in a video game, shrouded in mystery and developed slowly through the game to a point of "oh YES I get to finally confront him!" The story is good, the setup to the story is good, the writing is good. All of these elements add up to make it:

ONE OF THE BEST ADVENTURE GAMES EVER

Well, thanks for the clarification, I feel less dubious about the changes now. Though it would have been nice if you could have told us about it without spoilers. ;)

I know, some people are never content...

That I've never heard of or seen discussed in my 10+ years on the internet right until GOG suddenly released it?
