TheMonkofDestiny: Looks like I'll be alone in admission to liking Hobo with a Shotgun.

It's sad that a lot of these great character actors tended to be relegated to stunt casting in "auteur" filmmaker's movies late in their lives but in a way I'm glad at least someone was willing to still give them a chance when they've reached or even went past their allotted Hollywood shelf life as it were. Michael Parks, Harry Dean Stanton, Rutger Hauer and the list could go on - the entertainment world is a lesser place without them in it, truly.
Hobbo is legit one of my top 5 films ever to the point i will defend it till the last days. Rutger was top notch in it and even took a paycut to star in it. Mow lawns in peace me pal
He achieved immortality with a speech that will be remembered as long as humanity last...

Rest In Peace dear Rutger Hauer, your soul's white dove now flies to new worlds...
.... :(

A speech that he himself ad libbed. I'll say it again, without Rutger Hauer, Blade Runner would merely be an okay-ish attempt at interbreeding sci-fi and neo noir with some really impressive production design. It was Rutger Hauer who gave this movie a heart and soul, which made it become the classic it is today.

Such a great actor, so many great movies! It's a shame he never got around to making another movie with Verhoeven (Turks Fruit is great, BTW! Everyone should see it!). I'll miss him.
Damn...
I was too young when Floris was made, just only saw it some years ago. There was an interesting docu about Floris, that among other things told how Rutger grew in that role and became a good actor during the shooting of the series.

Gerin: RIP Rutger. Sorry to see you go.

Did anyone else like Ladyhawke as much as I did (which is a lot)?
I liked it enough to have bought the DVD some time ago. Now is a good time to start watching it to commemorate Rutger Hauer.

RIP

I don't know what you people are rambling about a Blyat Runner movie, I only know him from this.

Geralt_of_Rivia: Blind Fury, The Hitcher, Flesh+Blood, Buffy, Split Second and of course Blade Runner to name but a few.
I never liked Flesh+Blood, which I really wanted to since I'm also a huge Verhoeven fan, but totally agree with everything else. I'd also like to add:
Ladyhawke
Wedlock
Such great movies, and Rutger Hauer was one of the great 1980's action stars.

RIP, you will be missed!

Damn...Jan Michael Vincent and now Rutger Hauer? :(
Just re-watched The Hitcher again due to this. Damn it is a good movie, one that you just can't stop watching when you start it. (And yes I mean the 1986 version, not the piss-poor recent-ish remake.).

The Hitcher was The Movie which made a lasting impression of Rutger Hauer on me as a kid. I guess I hadn't seen Blader Runner yet at that point.

I also liked Blind Fury, a lot. I was also happy to see him in a smaller role in e.g. Sin City.

Did other countries have the surreal guinness adverts featuring him?
Rest in peace

Nope, I enjoyed it, and will probably watch it again, along with both Blade Runners this weekend.

R.I.P.

For those who did not know, the famous last words in Blade Runner were his. He came to the idea to Ridley Scott and the director was delighted.

As a side note, for those of you who like history. Flesh and Blood made the best depiction ever of Landsknechte ever done on a film, and a fine depiction of war in the period, complete with the widespread recovery of designs for war machines dating from the Classic Age, carefully preserved in books.

A great actor, with the wrong career. He did great things and deserved to have more chances. He proved that he was way more than an action movie actor. He could do any role, with depth, sublety and charm.

May he live forever in his art and the memory of people.
^ "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears...in...rain. Time to die."

Rest In Peace...

PS: A bit sad also is the fact that actors like him, bringing so much depth and soul to a character (and movie) is an art-style that is slowly dying out.

A highly underrated man indeed.
