I fully agree that VALVe gave Linux gaming a huge boost, but that was not the goal of the SteamMachine. It was rather a necessary step in Giving the SteamMachine a library of games. It has also lead to a number of linux games being bound to steam.
VALVe used linux because it was the cheapest, simplest way to reach their goal, which was to counter a possible walled garden from Microsoft with their own walled garden.
Excluding the fact UWP Apps are, currently, a poorer version of standard programs, I'd rather live in a Windows Store garden, than one built by VALVe.
Windows Store offers 10 concurrent uses per game, while Steam restricts you to 1 single instance of a single games from your entire library. Steam, isn't a Walled Garden, its a prison cell with a potted plant. And people exalt Gabe, because you get to choose which potted plant.
