Even though I may have previously said I wasn't going to get another console, it looks like I have changed my mind on that front. So, I've been doing some research, but I'm still not sure which one I ought to go for so I'm asking for advice from my fellow GOGgers. Please keep the fanboy-ism (aka flaming/trash-talking) to yourself. I'm really trying to look at all the factors before I make a decision.

So here goes:
- controllers: I did some more hands-on testing on two demo units at a Best Buy yesterday and once again I'm not totally comfortable with the DS4 - in the past my hands started cramping up with its older cousins, and that may very well happen here, too.. The XB pad just feels a lot better to hold (even in my not so big hands) as well as I have never been a big fan of the close proximity of the DS sticks. I suppose my familiarity with the asymmetrical approach does help with the XB pad (thanks Gamecube), but it also feels better. Sure, there may be third-party options but in all my years of gaming they've never matched up with first-party products. Lastly, I actually like that the XB ones still run on batteries. I have found it a lot easier and less hassling to quickly change out a pair of rechargeables rather than plugging in a DS3 when it's low. Also, once that battery doesn't hold a charge that well on the latter I'd imagine it'd be a pain to replace.

- performance: While they both seem to be very close it sounds like the PS4 has a slight advantage in the graphics power, but from what I've read while the XB does a fair share of mild upscaling on games they tend to run smoother overall. How much truth is there to that statement?

- space requirement: Neither may be huge, but they're big enough. I don't have all that much space for these things so I'm thinking of giving it the vertical standup treatment. That said, I've read it wasn't suggested to do so with the either one as it would block vents on both. I also read how some have added some quarter-inch high rubber feet to the bottom of their consoles which seems to have mitigated the problem. Any thoughts?

That said, how does that affect the disc drives? On that note, has the new XB stopped scratching discs like most 360 liked to do without any help?

- multiplayer: even Sony is charging for it now, both offer free games to download each month, and their subscription costs roughly about the same. What I do remember from the last generation is that the Xbox interface was way above what the PS3 offered. Have there been any real improvements made on that front by Sony? And, no, I do not give a flying fuck about that sharing shit.

- lastly, the games!: I do know they share practically all third-party games between one another, so this may come down to the exclusives. Is it even worth getting one over the other for them anymore? Seems like all Bone has going for itself really is the Halos and GoWs (couldn't give a fig about the latter), while Sony historically seems to have a better breadth of options and variety in their catalog, but at the same time it's not a huge amount there either. Thoughts?

I think that about covers it. So, yeah, any help you could give me with my decision making would be much appreciated.

If I had the money to spare for either, I'd upgrade my PC.
X1 is getting, err... post... err... oh, backwards compatibility support, and the native one that is. Last I heard it currently works on 100 games, but it could add more. That said, I did play the PS4 itself and I liked it, so its a bit of a draw here. Though if I remember well, one of my friends told me about a heckload of features that the X1 has, and the backwards compatibility is one.
I'd just keep my ps3, and buy a PS4.
Looks like a bad time to get a console considering the exclusives announced for the future are largely.......absent. PS4 will get Shenmue 3 if it ever comes out but PC may so as well.
---------PS4----------
-Shenmue 3
-Bloodborne
-Dark Souls 3 (PC probable)
-The Last Guardian
-Uncharted 4
-Destiny
-Infamous : Second Son
--------XBone--------
-Ryse : Son of Rome (PC available)
-Halo : MCC
-Dark Souls 3
-GoW
-Earlier access to Rise of the Tomb Raider
-Destiny

The PS4 is said to be more powerful because it has GDDR5 video memory instead of the GDDR3 of the Xbone. Both GPUs are about as strong as an AMD HD7770 but faster VRAM helps only if the devs don't cripple it and use lower requiring graphics for both so both games look similar.

I wouldn't get either, unless you can list off at least 5 games that are must have for you.

As it's looking, i'll be passing the XBone, the PS4 & the Wii-U; I'd recommend you do likewise. But that's your choice.
wii u, it actually has games

ha ha.

well, the difference isn't going to be super huge; most of the big games will probably be on both (as well as pc). PS4 would probably have more exclusives, although a lot of them would probably kind of niche.

I think Xbone is getting 360 backwards compatibility, which is nice since PS4 doesn't have any bc at all AFAIK. Though I can't help but think it would turn out like the 360's bc with the xbox and they'll just forget about updating it and fixing bugs after most of the bigger titles are taken care of. PS4 has some cross buy/cross play games available, if you have other sony systems.

I'd probably go after a PS4 first, particularly since the xbone game that looks most appealing to me is Rare Replay lol. (well, scalebound would probably be good once it's out too)
I'd honestly just get a PS4 based on the fact that some of the Xbox exclusives end up being on PC anyways, also PS4 price drop soon.

My thoughts exactly. £500 for a console, plus £80 a game, not that there is anything interesting currently. Must be mad to buy them.
Yeah, it ultimately boils down to which exclusives you want really. The PS4 does have a slight technical edge, but I don't think it really makes all that much of a difference. I've got both, and I've played Bloodborne, Driveclub, Ryse and Forza Horizon 2, and they're all stunningly beautiful games.

Someone pointed out the Wii U as well. Not much of an option if you're planning to use it as a single platform to play the multiplat titles, but it has by far the best exclusives of any platform this generation.

mrcrispy83: I think Xbone is getting 360 backwards compatibility
Much like the compatibility between the original Xbox and 360, it's not really backwards compatible; The hardware just won't allow it. Instead they are likely recompiling the executables (as a patch) rather than using something like a universal emulator (and letting all your games work). And like the Xbox & 360, only a handful of popular titles are going to go through this process.

Funny they said NO backwards compatibility at the beginning, and that could have been a selling point for someone moving to get a XBone and not have to leave their game library behind at the off chance their 360 breaks and they wonder if they should just get a used system at discount or a new system which supports their games... Which makes it deadly obvious which one you'd go for.

Something Microsoft should probably be going for, is getting the original Xbox compatibility first, because it's x86 architecture it should be loads easier while various companies work on recompiling their games as 'patches'...

But some games require accounts on PC...like Ubisoft games :P

Thankfully 99% of those games i'll happily shun and never touch... Watch Dogs, AssCreed 2 and on, Diablo 3, Sim City, etc...
