Even though I may have previously said I wasn't going to get another console, it looks like I have changed my mind on that front. So, I've been doing some research, but I'm still not sure which one I ought to go for so I'm asking for advice from my fellow GOGgers. Please keep the fanboy-ism (aka flaming/trash-talking) to yourself. I'm really trying to look at all the factors before I make a decision.
So here goes:
- controllers: I did some more hands-on testing on two demo units at a Best Buy yesterday and once again I'm not totally comfortable with the DS4 - in the past my hands started cramping up with its older cousins, and that may very well happen here, too.. The XB pad just feels a lot better to hold (even in my not so big hands) as well as I have never been a big fan of the close proximity of the DS sticks. I suppose my familiarity with the asymmetrical approach does help with the XB pad (thanks Gamecube), but it also feels better. Sure, there may be third-party options but in all my years of gaming they've never matched up with first-party products. Lastly, I actually like that the XB ones still run on batteries. I have found it a lot easier and less hassling to quickly change out a pair of rechargeables rather than plugging in a DS3 when it's low. Also, once that battery doesn't hold a charge that well on the latter I'd imagine it'd be a pain to replace.
- performance: While they both seem to be very close it sounds like the PS4 has a slight advantage in the graphics power, but from what I've read while the XB does a fair share of mild upscaling on games they tend to run smoother overall. How much truth is there to that statement?
- space requirement: Neither may be huge, but they're big enough. I don't have all that much space for these things so I'm thinking of giving it the vertical standup treatment. That said, I've read it wasn't suggested to do so with the either one as it would block vents on both. I also read how some have added some quarter-inch high rubber feet to the bottom of their consoles which seems to have mitigated the problem. Any thoughts?
That said, how does that affect the disc drives? On that note, has the new XB stopped scratching discs like most 360 liked to do without any help?
- multiplayer: even Sony is charging for it now, both offer free games to download each month, and their subscription costs roughly about the same. What I do remember from the last generation is that the Xbox interface was way above what the PS3 offered. Have there been any real improvements made on that front by Sony? And, no, I do not give a flying fuck about that sharing shit.
- lastly, the games!: I do know they share practically all third-party games between one another, so this may come down to the exclusives. Is it even worth getting one over the other for them anymore? Seems like all Bone has going for itself really is the Halos and GoWs (couldn't give a fig about the latter), while Sony historically seems to have a better breadth of options and variety in their catalog, but at the same time it's not a huge amount there either. Thoughts?
I think that about covers it. So, yeah, any help you could give me with my decision making would be much appreciated.
