Fever_Discordia: Didn't mean to be mean - I really was going off to do something else (and then, as so often happens, I didn't) and I thought I'd share what I'd found
The way you guys care about this stuff I feel like I got bloody lucky in that my research doesn't seem to have given the game away by a long chalk - I'll promise to be more careful in future(rama) and hope everyone can decide not to hate me forever!
I'm not an intential troll, sorry if it seemed that way!

futurama has two alphabets btw. and OP one is the less popular one apparently.
Great, now I'm not sure how much I can say in responce without seeming like a dick
BUT - apparently this 2nd alphabet isn't a simple 'this symbol = this letter' deal but has it's own weird decryption scheme
I feel its OK to say this because even after going to the trouble of running the scheme 2 different ways I'm STILL getting garbage out!

There's more to it than just the Futurama key. It's quite devious.

There's a pretty good implicit hint about the second step in the structure of the message.

yeah.

apparently the first alphabet was cracked just after first episode so they created the second one.
and im translating it at the moment myself. quite hard

Oh yeah, I know. I mean this contest doesn't follow the second alphabet exactly. There's more to the code.

Thanks, that's very generous!

Not to seem ungrateful -- but I do have to point out that I did have a hint from nmillar (existence of a second step), so I think the only difference is that I happened to have the right kind of nerd trivia floating around my brain. Sure you don't want to reconsider? :-)

Well, yes, lack of knowledge about these symbols could have been the main problem for me. When I saw this picture for first time some of them looked familiar but I had no clue about the whole rest and looking for images on the web is sometimes tricky ;)
