Tribes: Ascend. An online FPS. The only free one that I've ever enjoyed. The devs dropped support last year, but I believe the game is still fairly active.

What kinds of games do you like? It'll be a lot easier to give recommendations if you give some kind of idea of the genres you're looking for.

Downloading LOL now to give that a try. Just for fun I tried Everquest earlier and I came to realize i would just be grinding up to max level and mostly playing by my self so I uninstalled it :(. Kinda worried about LOL a little bit as I have no experience playing any sort of RTS competitively because I thought I would never stand a chance. Any tips for new players? or better yet anyone in the NA region I can play with?
Well I would like some competitive stuff were I play with other players but no MMORPG's, I decided against them. shooters, MOBA's and other similar stuff is fine though.

One game which hasn't been mentioned is Hearthstone, if you'd be interested in a CCG. It can be quite fun, and you don't need to spend any real money to play. It does have a bit of a slow start before you finish unlocking all the classes and building up your collection a little, though.pi4t: What kinds of games do you like? There's a coop mode against bots in LOL in which you can train a bit before heading into PvP. Actually, when you make a new account you are forced to play at least one match against bots before being able to play competitive matches. The first thing you have to do when jumping into an online match is to pick a role. You do that by typing the role you want to pick. There's no in-game mechanic to pick a role, that's why you have to type which one you want and talk to your team about it. There's an unwritten rule that says that the one who types first is the one who will get the chosen role. For example, if i am the first to type "top" i will be the one going to the top lane and no one else can pick it up. Of course, since it's pretty much an unwritten rule created by players there's no way to enforce it and there might be some trolls every now and then who will pick their role even though someone else had already chosen it firs, but most of the time people follow it.
There are 3 lanes in the game: bot (bottom), mid (middle) and top. There are 5 roles in the game: top, mid, adc, support (both go to the bot lane) and jungle (called jg). Top is the one who will go to the top lane and is usually a melee champion (but not always). Mid is the one responsible for the mid lane. Jungle is the one who plays in the jungle between lanes. ADC (attack damage carrier) is the one who deals damage and should be a ranged champion (like Vayne, Ashe, Sylvir, Caitlyn and Draven, for example). ADCs play in the bot lane. Support is the one who will support the ADC, as the name says. These are the champions that can provide shields, heal, pull enemies, use crowd control spells. Sometimes people go dual top instead of having one in the top and one in the jungle, especiallyin matches with lower level players, but it's really not recommended.
Each champion is better suited for one particular role (and lane). You need to pick a role and then pick a champion suited for the rolw you have chosen. However, some champions are more flexible than others. For example, Yasuo can go mid or top, it's even viable as a jungler. Blitzcrank, for example, is not recommended for any role other than support.
I don't recommend support and jungle for newcomers to the game, since they do require quite a bit of experience, especially jungle. In the jungle role you need to know exactly which neutral monsters to slay, when to gank, how to counter jungle, which are the best positions to put wards. Avoid the jungle role until you get more experience.
One of the most important things in LOL is to make a build that suits your champion and your current situation. You do that by buying items in your base (there's a merchant near the spawn point). LOL already has a tab that shows you the recommended items for your champion, and it's accurate, for the most part. But these items are also situational. For example, if the enemy team is dealing a lot of magical damage, you whould buy an item that provides resistance to magical damage (depending on your role). If you're suffering from crowd control spells, you should buy items that mitigate the duration of such spells.
There are many guides online that show the best builds and the best way to play with certain champions. Watching matches on YT from experienced players is also a great way to learn and improve your skills.
Well, that's just the basic. You'll only fully understand it after playing it for some time. I still have a LOT to learn and i've been playing for quite a while.
If i played in the NA server i would play with you.

The premise is very basic and it comes with a tutorial. I prefer Dota 2 for many reasons including that you don't have to buy the characters or stat boosters (runes in LoL) with grinding/game points. Dota also comes with item drops that you can trade or sell. I made $17 just from a recent holiday event beating the boss and selling the items. That wasn't even with a team, just randoms I ended up with. So if you want a chance to profit (to buy more games!) while you have some fun, that's the only option. But if you're looking into MOBAs, some other notable F2P ones are also Heroes of Newerth, the upcoming Heroes of the Storm from Blizzard (the "grind for stuff" like LoL), Dawngate (like LoL, so you'd be familiar moving between the 2), Strife (popular for some reason), and if you like DC comic characters then Infinite Crisis might be fun for you.
Also, don't play any of them competitively until you learn the basics and get some friends to team up with. You'll play against bots for a while and discover that PvP is a lot more dynamic and requires team coordination. The MOBA community likes to yell and be angry at you whether you do well or not, so learn to ignore it and you'll be fine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5iqYuFmzqg :)

Well I played two matches so far, one with all bots and the other with players vs bots and I was pretty bad but i'm not giving up yet. I can tell the learning curve will be steep but I think i can get the hang of it if I keep at it.

I second Warframe, though yes it is quite repetitive once all planets are checked, and the free part possibilities are slim, in term of character and item space in the inventory.. Still, good one.

I finally tried HAWKEN last night and I quite enjoyed it. Not bad.
Path of Exile also seemed pretty good from the hour or two I've played with it so far.
Been meaning to give Planetside 2 a try. Downloaded it via Steam about a week ago, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

I know? What's your point? ^^
This guide will probably help you a lot. They don't cover what is covered in the tutorials, but I guess you probably already played them.
Have you found people to play with? Makes it a lot easier, usually. ^^

It is kinda complicated when you first play it. I remember the first time playing LoL. I had no idea what the meta was, I just chose a champion and pressed buttons. It was confusing as all hell, but I had a surprisingly nice teammate who told me what to do. ^^ This guide will probably help you a lot. You could make a free trial WoW account
The limitations are a level cap of 20, cap of 10 gold and not able to use auction house and join guilds. And granted - the ease of leveling today means you reach the cap in 20 min...

Hey thanks I will read that guide. I only played one game with players vs bots, but going in with friends no. At least here it seems that anyone who would play is playing in a different region. Maybe I should make another thread and ask people from NA to play with me and help me learn the game.deshadow52: Well I played two matches so far, one with all bots and the other with players vs bots and I was pretty bad but i'm not giving up yet. Hedgewars
It's a wonderful Worms clone (with hedghogs instead of worms) and there are always lots of people online to play against (but it's even more fun to play hotseat against a friend).
