So...I was digging around under my parents' bed and found a box of my old stuff. Lo and behold, one of the items in the box was the Icewind Dale 3 In 1 Boxset. Glee and stuff, naturally.

It's exactly the sort of thing I've been craving - I can't believe I had forgotten I own it. I've never played it. Before I start, I want people's advice.

1. Are there any required unofficial patches? I'm well aware that Baldur's Gate II and Temple of Elemental Evil are practically a mess without fan patches.

2. Are there any important mods I should know about? Obviously I'm playing them in order, but is there something akin to the Baldur's Gate Trilogy mod that shifts them all to IWD2's newer engine?

3. Are there any special tricks or tips to know to play? It seems most games have them.

4. I stumbled across a review once that rambled on a bit about how unbalanced IWD is, and how you have to export characters and import them again and repeatedly do the beginning part of the game in order to have a chance of continuing. Is this true, or just paranoia/powergaming?

Thanks so much in advance - I know this thread technically belongs in the IWD forums, but I doubt I'm the only one that rarely even goes to game-specific forums, and I figure it's free advertising for one of the lesser-mentioned Forgotten Realms titles in GOG's catalog.

1. Not unless you really need a widescreen mod or there's some Vista/7 issue I wouldn't know about. IWD 1 and 2 were pretty bug-free out of the box as I recall. Find the last official patch and you should be good to go. In fact I played IWD2 a few months ago with the same setup I put on my machine when I bought the PC four years ago and had no issues, despite vid card upgrades in between.

3./4. Don't leave home without a cleric. And a rogue. Build a good well-rounded party from the start and you shouldn't need to do a bunch of import/export to replace party members. Sounds like the reviewer didn't like to have to save often or didn't understand "five tanks and a Band-Aid" is not a well-balanced party.
1. Gibberlings3 has a Fixpack for IWD and a couple of tweak packs for the series.

There's also the Trials of the Luremaster free official expansion pack for IWD1, not sure if it comes with your game or not.
Pretty sure Widescreen Mod works with them too.

2. Nothing like that I'm aware of...

3. Save often.
It's more combat heavy and you'll be surrounded a lot, so be sure to deal with that (maybe put your mage in the middle)
Keep it simple - just go with 2 or 3 Fighters, a rogue, a cleric, a mage.

4. The game starts off pretty tough, since you only have like single digit hit points and you're going up against large groups of goblins and other nasty critters. Plus some of the monsters (Yxunomei is a great example) are tough as nails and can easily destroy you if you're not fully prepared.
