Way too much Blizzard hate in this thread. Both Dune 2 and WarCraft innovated on the RTS genre, neither of them invented it. Criticizing Diablo on the merits of an inevitability argument has got to be the most senseless thing I've read in awhile as well. I'm also curious how Torchlight 2 is going to be the best game in its genre ever and how all of Diablo 3's merits have been extinguished due to that.

While I don't disagree that StarCraft 2 was late, I completely disagree with the premise that a good game is "past its time".

It seems like they're taking Blizzcon away from WOW players, and that seems kind of insulting to me in that respect.

I don't like that Brett Sperry,he was wargame designer,invented to use "RTS" for tactical (or skirmish) scale real-time 4x game.He should invented more unique and suitable genre name,because of Europa Univeresalis and XXXcraft were labelled with same "RTS".

The names for most genres are contentious, but thanks for the name reference, I must say I do like this Bretty Sperry character. Sorry to say I haven't played EU yet, though I do own the third. Best not to refer to "_"Craft as XXXcraft, in my humble opinion.

It's funny, that RTS is such a simple word, yet you still need a lot of waving your hands around to explain the basic wargame 2-phase turn based mode the genre had since bleeding 1811.

Make it an event centered on classic and early games. Get that guy who wrote Manic Miner to appear, and I'll spend anything you want for a PPV ticket.

Somehow, fanboys forget that the only reason GOG exist, is to make money.

The difference is small, but I think, significant.

If you achieve something people strongly need by blazing a new pass,that is the best thing humankind can do.At the same time, making money is essential source of someone,company,and services be existing in society.

See, I don't think this is fair. Although Diablo certainly learned some lessons from Rogue, it's hardly just a Rouge-like with a slick interface. It's its own beast, and it's the game that really started that whole "clickity clickity" genre of hack-n-slash RPGs. I mean, the FPS genre goes back waaaaay before Halflife. But that doesn't mean that it wasn't an innovative game, because it took that genre and turned it into something different that many other devs followed and built upon.

Not that I'm saying "ZOMG DIABLO IS SOOOOOOO INNOVATE!!!11"

I cannot for a mere second believe that they (Blizzard) were losing any money, i read the same thing somewhere as well, but i forget where. Every time they ran a con, they sold out in mere minutes, and their last convention costs $150.00 US per ticket. Fans were litterally begging them to move to a new venue, but Activision/Blizzard turned a deaf ear to that request. Like some other member said, they just didn't have jack shit to show.

Yeah, roguelikes ultimately went into a different direction, adding multiple ways of interacting with objects (anvils as thrown weapons? check), basic modeling of physics, environment destruction, AI, character classes. Diablo took Moria and spiced it up with extensive inventory management and more survivability for the main character (normal RL will easily permakill you in the first hour). The new wave of Diablo "clones" like Din's Curse et al. take Diablo concept as a base but add elements of roguelike world modeling to it.
