It started a few hours ago that the police used violence at the Stuttgart 21 (train station building project) demo. Rumors say, there died at least two people and one was mutiliated by a police water gun, losing an eye.
Do you have a link on this? Only I can't find anything right now.

Surely a tragedy if someone gets harmed, but its onesided to just say "the police used violence". What about demonstrators throwing stones at the police, while at the same time padding the front row with kids?
Most of the time its "liberal" assholes forcing a reaction out of the police and then screaming if they get it.

Hey there, I've heard of riots and things in German cities have become quite common. Is this true? I've only ever been to Berlin.

Well, from my experience with demos, sticks and stones start when people join in to the demo. So You can have a 1000 people demo'ing, and 10 more extreme people joining in, just to make a mess. Seen it a lot of times. Psychology of the mob, or something, s%#t escalates.

And then everyone screams, that the demo people were aggressive, while it was all about 10 dumb kids who diss the police. It's actually very easy to make a demo violent and bad. Some extreme left [usually] groups use those tactics to portray the other party as the bad guys. ;)

The only one who used violence is the police. The demonstrators wanted no violence, as can be seen in the videos.

Up to now the rumours about deaths should be greatly exagerrated. If so it would be a great tragedy. But I hope not. And no, riots are something I have never seen in my life, so come visit us (we only eat sausages and drink beer ... :) ). Demonstrations however for one or another cause are common. And the police is always the puffer between everybody - not that easy. Normally nobody gets hurt. So I would not believe extreme rumors until there is a reliable source.

Actually the last big tragedy were the 21 deaths at the love parade this year who died in a panic... who would have thought that such things still happen.

That's why there is a question mark in the thread title.

Selective reports much : wasser-gegen-demonstranten-steine-gegen-polizisten.
Im not saying that the demonstrators as whole are responsible, probably most that get hurt where demonstrating peacefully. Its just the cheesy way this always gets portrayed in the media annoys me, yes there typically aren't videos before the situation escalated (probably because the people filming were busy throwing stones earlier).

What does the police/government get from violently hitting on citizens (bear in mind that the police is there to do their job first and foremost).
Some extreme leftist will have a field day reporting a heavily biased story though.
Nazi Germany strikes again, amirite.

As Arteveld said, it's mob psychology. People tend to stop thinking and just follow whatever the crowd is doing - the Rodney King riots in LA are another example from years ago. It also works in reverse, thankfully - just go to a New Year's celebration in the streets.

I intend to go back :D
I'm thinking it'd be cool to teach English there, but I don't know how difficult it is to get a teaching job.

Well, as a teacher in school you would usually have some kind of pedagogical training or have worked in another school. English is now teached from class one in school so I guess they would be looking for but I have no real insight there.

Maybe check the international schools. They are private and probably are more open for applications from overseas.

Btw: No deaths yesterday... :)

Of course, I expect to have to learn to teach English first.
Thanks for the link, it's helpful.

And good that there were no deaths yesterday
