Reason I ask is because in addition to being a computer gamer I am also (surprise) an avid tabletop gamer. I play in 3 D&D games and may possibly be joining a 4th.

I like D&D minis, as they are cheap enough, but they don't always have something I like. I've had 3 Reaper(tm) minis professionally painted, and the guy I have do it usually charges $15-$20 total per mini (he buys the mini I want, paints it, and then ships it to me).

So I'm just wondering if anyone here paints them, and if so, what they might charge. Not that I'm unhappy with "my guy" but if I can get a better deal, I'll do it.

If you're not doing Warhammer (or anything else Games Workshop has their grubby hands on) can't you just paint yourself? I mean you don't need official colors unless you're playing a specific faction in a Games Workshop game, I think other minis tabletop gaming companies are way cooler about this.

You might have fun learning to paint that well.
I have some Tyranids I have painted somewhere. Some friends did me an epic purple blood-like colored squad since purple is my favorite color and I painted the rest by the official paints. Not as good, but still decent enough.

I wasn't even aware that GW had restrictions on the paint schemes that could be used in their games (I assume this only applies at their tourny level and not in shops or anywhere else - where you can -- paint totally as you want)

I'm not that talented with paints. And while it'd be fun learning, the little bit of free time I do have is spent playing D&D. Remember, I'm Mr. Mom to triplets! Ain't they getting big?!

Cute kids! :D

I do a little bit of painting, and i highly reccomend you do it yourself. Painting those little bastards is half the fun. Warhammer, Balltelore, Blood Berets, Epic, they're all fun to paint. And it clears your head. I've had an extremely stressful semester, and sitting down once in a while to paint a little really helps me keep my shit togheter. :P

The miniatures or the kids?
It really is quite fun to paint them, even if your not great at it. I painted some Battletech minis. They turned out decent enough, and I don't really have any skill with painting. I suggest using an ink-wash or black-wash. It does a great job of making a crappy paint job look much better. Im too cheap to get the good stuff, so I just did a black-wash on mine. Even if they don't turn out that great, you'll get more respect for trying than you will by just buying pre-painted figures.

I like to paint miniatures, but I'm not that good, certainly not professional quality.
@Aliasalpha

Lol, as they say. :)

@ OP

Luxartis brushes are great value, very high quality brushes for miniature painting.
Vallejo game colors are also great value, high quality. And can be got quite cheap off ebay.

Quit messing around. Start painting! :)

Actually they lord over shop rules too, if you let someone play Blood Ravens or whatever and they aren't painted with official paints and the official scheme you can find your supplies cut. They're serious douches about it.

Hmm must be a US shop thing - I've never ever known the stores in the UK to act anything like that.

I paint miniatures, and to be honest if he's only charging you $15-$20 per mini, you won't find a better deal. Most painters I know would start at ~$60 a mini, unless you just wanted rank and file warhammer minis which is barely painting them, more like just making sure every part is covered.

Now with that in mind, I'd suggest learning to paint yourself, it can be relaxing and not nearly as hard as you probably think. I really like the reaper Master Series Paints myself, in fact I have the complete line (including the 38 HD paints) on my painting table behind me. :D
Yea, $15-$20 is pretty insane, especially since he buys it and all.

I paint Space Marines, Reaper stuff, whatever I can find.
