Okay, basically I'm looking for source ports for Doom Engine games. Specifically, I'm looking for one source port that will run all of the below:

Doom/Ultimate Doom
Doom 2
Final Doom
Master Levels for Doom 2
Heretic
Hexen
Hexen: Deathkings of the Dark Citadel
Strife

I'd also like it to be able to run other WAD files, like the Xbox Doom maps, PSX Doom and N64 Doom.


As for the specifics of the port, I would like it to have the option to run it as vanilla as possible, but to have that as a choice, not a necessity, as I'd quite like playing it updated too, by which I mean high-res textures, maybe 3D models, lightmaps, true mouselook, maybe jumping (though the maps themselves don't require that as it was never part of the game).

I've been having a look around at what I can find and I've come up with the following list:

ZDoom
GZDoom
Vavoom
Zandronum (used to be Skulltag?)

I have tried the Doomsday Engine in the past but that doesn't support Strife and hasn't been updated in a long time.

Oh, and if non-install options are available (extract and play) then that's a bonus.

korell: I'm sure ZDoom supports even Strife, so you should have no problems if you stick to that.

Btw I'm not so sure that they've stopped work on jDoom/Doomsday. I thought they did too, but I just ran a quick Google and came up with this:

DOSBox and Chocolate DOOM.

I'm a simple man...

ZDoom is my favorite. It has enough options and enhancements to keep things interesting, but you can easily play with almost identical settings to the original. I've also never had any issues with it, either.

jDoom is my favorite, although I certainly see the appeal of Chocolate Doom for the hardcore oldies.

I use GZDoom myself. The only thing I have found that it doesn't run are QDoom, which requires EDGE, and I believe both of the Doom 64 conversions use their own sort of source port, and I don't think you can use the outputted .WADs in GZDoom. Other than that, I haven't had any troubles.

Huh. Brutal Doom sounds interesting. I might try that. Maybe I should give ZDoom another try too. I stopped using it because it was running into weird issues on my last computer. But it would be nice to be able to turn off all the added features and still have a good resolution and slicker control options (something that you can't really do with jDoom very easily).

Besides loading .wads faster and being easier/faster to test levels in Doom Builder, not really. It aims to be as close to the original .exe as possible, even keeping the old bugs and limits. Besides some minor things like no vertical mouse movement.

Nice find. Turns out my link to the Doomsday Engine site was out of date - how many times have they changed their site address? But yes, still no Strife. Ah well, but at least they are still working on it and there is some hope that Strife will get added. I'll keep tabs on that page.
Yes, I did some searching and found Doom 64 Absolution TC and Doom 64 EX.

Absolution TC appears to be a recreation, not a port. It also appears to use an old modified Doomsday Engine.

Doom 64 EX uses the N64 ROM to extract the WAD files, so that should be a proper port. I think I'll give that one a go, see how it runs.

Well, I've just tested out Doom 64 EX and it does exactly what it says it does. Very usable, nice and clean installation, and with some nice optional changes to the N64 version. Mouselook makes this game playable as the N64 controller was not good for this game.
