From my school days long ago an 80 was a B, and pretty good. You telling me you think it's gonna suck that bad? :\
I like physics puzzles...I wish more games would employ them, albeit not just the seesaw variety.

It'd help if they were actual puzzles, not just "side A goes up -> side B goes down" or "here are 74 crates, stack em to reach that button over there" type puzzles.

You know, "puzzles" that are nothing but an insulting timesink.

Unfortunately I can't bash DN:F specifically for that because they are all too common in games these days.

The thing I found most amusing (and confusing) about many of the reactions to DNF:

Pro-DNF: "You don't like it because it's old-school!"
Anti-DNF: "No, I don't like it because it's not old-school!"

I agree, but then they implemented those puzzles back when they were new/fresh/relevant/not overplayed..and it pays to acknowledge that much when criticizing that aspect of it.

Still though, more variety couldn't hurt....maybe DNF2(if it is made) will shine even better in that area.
Sort of...but actually it's more like those who loved DN3D wanted it so long and so bad that they got overhyped & expected too much of it to be like DN3D.

That's because from what I have played of it DNF is an old school shooter with concessions to new mechanics forced in. The two weapon limit for example makes absolutely no sense when you have a game as action heavy as DNF. DNF if a compromise and it's suffered because of it.

This is to be expected with all the changes over the years and all the stuff GB shoehorned in as well.

It has no relation to school grades. It's only about PC Gamer "grades". Dragon Age 2 as a game was average, as a sequel it was terrible and they gave it a score of 94. Now they give Duke a score of 80 and you're telling me about school grades?

Hopefully mods for PC will kick in soon-ish and some of that will be changed a little bit :)

I haven't played the full version but from the demo I personally don't see which part of it could be called "old school" (apart from the presence of Duke and the dated graphics). The demo is definitely a "modern" console shooter : slow movements, limited number of enemies, limited number of holdable weapons, QTE, regenerating health, ect...

To me, a grade above a certain point means it's good...not any game below a certain score is gonna be crap.

Wow, that review starts with arguably the silliest idea. That "old' gamers are clinging to a hobby they should move on from and let the young people enjoy. At least that is how I read it.

Yeah, I find it strange that there is a need to praise / berate the game. Seems there is also a need to bash old school as well. I liked the old DN's and believe I would fall into the target market but . . . I find myself feeling sorta ho-hum about it.

My first criteria when buying a game . . . does this sound like a game that is fun to play? After 12 yrs of development I would expect raves from all sides about DNF, how much fun it is, how great the weapons are, how great the levels are etc etc. I was hoping for some indication that it had been twelve years . . . maybe some maturity gained but still crass from a more mature point of view? I love shooters almost as much as I do RPGs but I'm not hearing anything that makes me want to buy this game so far . . =)

I think you missed the point on how ridiculous the comment was. He said blocky like Duke3D. Duke3D is completely flat and has no blocks unless you're talking about the polygonal bosses in the N64 port.

This may be the biggest collective deception sice "The phantom menace".
