Cameron: Fallout 1 and 2 are the Michael Jordan of video games
Fallout 1 and 2 don't hold your hand. It requires imagination, and with that, you create your own story. It's slow pace for combat, and the times you use combat, are so unique and awesome. It's lack of 'balancing" things adds a sense of realism and fun. Fallout 1 cuts the crap and throws you right into the action, and if you take the game the right way, you'll enjoy it much more than most games today. Because it's still so unique.

Delixe: You do realize that later in the game you will be absolutely swimming in money? A high repair skill and a little sidequesting will have you hoarding vast numbers of caps in no time.

I had crazy sums of money and all the stuff I was hoarding was worth a lot more than the caps I actually had. I couldn't even begin to shift it all in suitable volumes. That was on the hardest difficulty too. Money alone isn't much of a motivation in that game.
what about blackjack and hookers? hopefully new vegas will bring something new to the table

Vegas seems like it will offer more opportunities to spend your caps, yeah. You can also modify your weapons which should mean spending caps on scopes and underslung grenade launchers too.
The original Fallouts just had that something special about them. Though I was obsessed with Fallout 3 for the better part of a year, especially with the DLC. As far as New Vegas goes, I hope it doesn't feel like an add on, and has some major gameplay changes, not just "we essentially took the game, added some new textures and hope to ride on the series' success".
The problem with a lot of new games is they are dependent on graphics or some gimmic rather than the epic stories of old. Which is probably why I like this site so much.
For example, you get a game on the scope of Morrowind, and then you get this eye candy "Oblivion" that while still enjoyable while it lasts, can't help to feel watered down.
sry for the rant.
I think New Vegas is going to be a treat. The old development team is at it again, bringing back the flavor of the old games through the new dialog system. Improved partner AI, and just the AI in general. And what, I think at least, is the best thing about the game, The Hardcore Mode. Thirst, hunger, and heat exhaustion and a realistic difficulty, sounds good to me.
But I see what you are saying Shadesofdeath320, And most likely it will look exactly the same as Fallout 3, maybe a little smoother. But you gotta remember, New Vegas was untouched by the nuclear bombs, so it is not destroyed and ruined like we are used to, so it's a whole new ballgame for Fallout, who knows what it will look like?
If the game plays as good as it looks you will hear no complaints from me, and possibly won't hear anything form me, as my social life will have taken the path of the dinosaurs.
I also keep forgetting that it is Obsidian behind this, so perhaps my fears will be unrealized.
It is a trend I see in pretty much every entertainment outlet, though. Everything is remakes and sequels, and the stuff that is orginal is so lackluster it's disgusting. I'll take quality over quantity any day.
nah i watch to much futurama

Yeah, I hear you. Let's hope they don't just slap the same mechanics under a new setting and call it done. If I get attacked by a random deathclaw in the middle of the street i'm rage quitting xD
