Pretty much agree, I've also liked Tactics, it is in my book just under NV but still above F3 which I never could get into for some reason.
Almost all of the games over fallout 3.

I'd actually say it (FO:NV) might be better than Fallout1, if you consider the four official DLCs. It ends up being a really great exploration of many of the open ends from the first two games.

And good call on not even including the console FO:BoS in your list. Let it be stricken from the histories ;)
Mine would be:

1) Fallout 2 (My first Fallout game)
2) Fallout New Vegas (Go on, crucify me)
3) Fallout 1 (Didn't play this until last December)
4) Fallout 3 (Good, just not quite Fallouty enough for me)

EDIT: Also, I should mention that im running a very heavily modded FNV, so my opinion may be biased due too the amazingness of Millenias weapon mods.

1. Fallout 2
2. Fallout 1 \ New Vegas (can't decide, really)
3. Fallout: Tactics \ Fallout 3 (both interesting experiments with different genres)

749. Fallout: POS :)
Glad to see New Vegas doing so well! I was always under the impression it wasn't well liked due to the bugs but I loved the game. And while I thought Fallout 3 was excellent was well, I vastly preferred NV for the small additions that really made the game for me.

I can't judge the new vs. the old though - for me I think it would be a case of "Do I feel like a first person "shooter" today, or do I feel like some turnbased story action"

Same. I'm not trying to make generalizations, but the way I see it, is that people who started on FO3, will prefer FO3 to FNV, as FNV has a different feel, if you know what I mean. People who started on the originals, will prefer FNV over Fo3, as it is closer to those ones.

That and it really bugs me that the Enclave made a return in FO3. I nuked them. in FO2.
I'm someone who dislikes FO3 and will be glad to finish and uninstall it. Would I also hate New Vegas? As in how similar is it. I'm seeing people disliking 3 but putting NV up with the first one in terms of quality.

Well, it's from the same perspective.

Fallout3 is like The Elder Scrolls: We Nuked Shit. Fallout New Vegas is like Fallout: Now In First Person.

If your principle problem is the mechanic of first-person games, you'll hate New Vegas just as much as FO3, I'd imagine. If your problem is more with how the game feels and how the story goes, then you should find New Vegas a significant improvement. And if you just seethe with rage about bunnies and kittens and such, then you'll probably hate everything, always.

My list of my favorite fall out titles would be:
1. Fallout 1
2. Fallout 2
3. Fallout tatics
4. Fallout NV
5. Fallout brotherhood of steel
6. Fallout 3.
and.... when Fallout 4 comes out, it would be number 7 most likely as Bethesda will make it more streamlined then Fallout 3 and Skyrim.
I own but have yet to play the originals (1,2,Tactics) but I've played 3 including a few DLC and New Vegas and I preferred 3. I played them on the XBox 360 if that makes a difference. The thing I did not like in NV is the endless desert, in 3 you found traces of civilization everywhere.

I did start 1 but unless I misunderstood the main mission, you do not have all the time it the world to do it, which means taking lots of side quests and really exploring everything is probably not advisable.

That's probably because 3 takes place in Washington and New Vegas, welll, on Mojave Desert :)

You can explore as much as you want - it's rather hard to hit the time limit if you don't want to. And if you don't like the limit, there are mods that remove it.
I haven't played 2 or Tactics of yet. Started on 2, but I feel like it's running into the same issue that I had with F: NV, wherein the things I want and expect from a Fallout game are pushed aside for subversions of such. Greater number and lucrativity of towns, an intense story focus which drowns out some of the mystique of the Wasteland, and just a generally less exciting atmosphere. I'll make my judgement when I finish it, but that's just the same relation I had of F3 to F:NV.

I will not deny that Fallout 1 is the more focused and innovative game, and contains elements I think lack in the 3D ones. However, Fallout 3 gave me an entirely new experience when I first played it. Maybe it was the order I palyed them in, but Fallout 3 was simply more impactful. I've seen people sort of malign the exaggeration of qualities that Fallout 3 had (while also claiming it wasn't wacky enough(?)) yet that iconography made it reach far beyond regular gaming culture. Perhaps I'm just a sucker for the iconic. Those gaming moments I remember the most though are usually big factors in me putting them up on the wrung. Exiting Vault 101, the return of the Enclave, and moments of being lost in the Wasteland were far more impactful to me than leaving Vault 13 or finding the Water Chip.

Fallout: New Vegas is in a lot of ways a better game than Fallout 3, particularly in its interesting use of game mechanics. Obsidian was given a lot of time to figure out the limits of what they were working with and use them expertly. One particular mission with a radiated Vault was a great highlight for me. But battling for control over a near fully refurbished city and quests which cover the same (FAR less interesting) ground repeatedly, I feel like the Wasteland wonder was completely ripped from the game. It became more like Oblivion than Fallout. I didn't happen upon settlements with surprise, it became mundane. New Vegas has a lot of minor annoyances, like some areas being far too big for what they contain, many choices but no really clear way to get to any given choice, and a revision to some of the gamepaly elements which I jsut don't agree with. That's secondary though when we're talkign about a series as a whole.

So for me:

1. Fallout 3
2. Fallout
3. Fallout: New Vegas

Sounds like you'd really appreciate at least two of the four DLCs for New Vegas, if you haven't already played them. Honest Hearts and Old World Blues are very dense and directed without ever feeling like you're on rails. Lonesome Road wraps things up nicely and is a good closer for the story, too. You should be able to get the DLCs for about a buck apiece on sale. I'd really recommend, based on what you're saying you liked and missed in FO:NV, that you keep an eye out or them, if you haven't already played them and think you could tolerate another play through of New Vegas.
