Don't get me wrong, it's a pretty entertaining game, but it's not very entertaining roguelike. It's too short and repetitive.

In Dungeons of Dredmor, I played dozens of hours, and still I'm finding new stuff and haven't even finished the game once.

in FTL... Well, I managed to defeat the main boss ONCE, but my main issue with this game, it gets repetitive very fast. "Random" encounters were repeting for me at the second playthrough, battles look almost exactly the same every time...

it gets tiring pretty fast. It's a good game to play once a week, but not on regular basis.

There's just too little content.

I wouldn't say it sucks, but I do agree that it does have its fair share of issues.
I've only just started playing it, but I've heard similar complaints from a friend. Does anyone know if the developer has reacted to this kind of feedback? Maybe the randomness could be improved upon with an update, DLC or fan mods adding new content?

I had the exactly opposite experience with repetitive roguelikes. I played FTL without regard for food and advanced hygiene and thought it to be the most genius game ever (marred by balance issues, but whatever) until I won and got supremely bored.
Same with A Valley without Wind: I played it for about a week until I died the first time.
And I loved the repetitiveness, learning from experience.
Then, bam, the magic was gone, and now I can't force myself to launch either game, not even on a per-week basis, but at all.

I hear you. Have you obtained all the different ships yet? Part of what extended the entertainment value for me, was changing strategy with the different ship types. While the types of encounters themselves do get a bit repetitious, having to use different strategy/tactics with some of the other ships/crews, at least made it a bit more interesting, and I think to date (haven't played it again in quite a few months though) I haven't been able to beat the boss with all the ships. As a matter of fact, I think I've only been able to do it with 3 or 4 of them.
I've unlocked only 2 ships, but I don't feel the urge to unlock more of them... OK, there are different playstyles with them, one focusing on missiles, one on drones, etc etc. but still...
All indie games are amazing. What are you, racist?

Looks like a case of this game is just sorta "Meh" for you. I actually enjoyed even just trying to get the different ships when I was on my FTL binge (kinda like Starmaker above). I'll probably fire it up again sometime in the future, but I also got a bit burned out on it after quite a bit of non-stop play. I guess like most games, some are just not everyone's cup of tea, while others get a hardon for 'em
A free roguelike set in space I really enjoy is Transcendence.

For the first few times, it's a good idea to use the freighter ship, as it starts with auto-targeting.

I just bought FTL from GOG, but I haven't installed it yet. I watched some gameplay vids, and I was hoping it wasn't as repetitive as some of them suggested. Still have my fingers crossed.

That looks kinda interesting...maybe sorta like a roguelike version of Space Rangers perhaps? Do you think it would run okay on an average laptop based on your experience?

Just fyi, regarding FTL; ike most rogues, it can be a bit frustrating at first till you get the feel and gist of it. Give it some time (yep, your probably gonna die fairly quick and often initially, lol), but once you get the hang of it, you'll go further, and have more fun each attempt

My previous machine is probably 12 years old now, and ran Transcendence with no problems.

It's a 2D space-shooter with a roguelike approach to items, world-creation, missions, etc. You have to be pretty savvy about weapon selection and especially shields/armor selection as you progress. With the right gear, a large enemy ship can be breezy. With the wrong gear, you can get swamped pretty quickly.

I don't know about Space Rangers, I'll look it up, thanks.

edit: I'll be patient with FTL. I enjoy roguelikes, especially TOME4, Nethack, and the above.

I haven't played FTL at all but watching LPs showed me that it would become very boring, very quickly. I couldn't understand all the raving people were doing.

I've been looking for a space game that lets you control a single ship and each of the guys on it. I had a love for the very old Star Command (1988) and have wanted to find something similar. FTL seemed somewhat similar, but it seems far too short. Star Command (2013) seems similar, but it's a phone app.

I've played free dungeon rogues that have FAR more content than FTL. Maybe the dev will later add more content.

Cool, sounds like my laptop will have a good chance of running it then. Always looking for some nice, simple games to install on it when travelling. Thanks!

Re: Space Rangers...I might describe it as a poor man's X3TC, or X3TC lite, lol

On the subject, a flash game called Evacuation:
http://www.foddy.net/Evacuation.html

When I first saw FTL, I thought of this. It's a puzzle game of sorts. You command a ship divided into chambers by large colored doors. Some chambers contain crewmen, other contain invading aliens. Your job is to toggle the right doors to blow the aliens (but not your crewmen) out into space.

Good fun for an hour or two.

edit: Just looked up Space Rangers and I'm putting it on my list, thanks!
