Few days ago gamespot released this video about once again the death of survival horrors and looking at Resident evil 4 responsible for that death, Though it is a good game.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1eO4e0jSnEo

HOWEVER what I like to discuss that can we think of other games that were "Great" but left a bad legacy?

Anybody got one, me I am looking at Call of Duty 4, great game but left a legacy of developers desparetly "Competing" with Call of Duty with established games that were never made to be like COD in the first place.
I'm going to begrudgingly offer up Diablo 2 because of all the substandard crap clones that flooded the market in it's wake. A few were good (Titan Quest) but so many more were so bad. Some folks like D3 but I really think everything else since D2 has fallen short which may leave Diablo 2 as a victim of it's own greatness.

BTW, GREAT TOPIC!

Grim Fandango might be one. I read a while ago an interview with Tim Schafer where he talked about how it contributed to the decline of adventure games, because publishers figured "If a game this high-profile and generally awesome didn't sell, thy're probably not profitable anymore".

Grims advertising outside the US sucked though, hell lucasarts advertising sucked outside the US (unless it was starwars then it got full page newspaper ads)
Earthbound.

Nintendo makes great game. Nintendo makes shitty advertisements for great game. Nintendo wonders why sales are so poor after airing shitty advertisements. Nintendo takes out their frustrations on Western audiences for the rest of eternity by holding back All Things Mother.

Not to mention that the thing came with a game guide, so it was more expensive than most carts.

I find it amazing we are still getting a new Fire Emblem and that game was Japan only.
I laughed at the link on Resident Evil 4 because I hated Resident Evil 4 and I pretty much hated all the Resident Evil games except for the Wii shooters (Umbrella and Darkside Chronicles). Bad games... with bad legacies. LOL.

I don't agree too much with this "great games with terrible legacy" idea. I don't blame the games for the "terrible" legacy, I blame the developers/publishers.

In Resident Evil 4, the series went in an interesting direction when it took advantage of the tecnology back then and it still was a Resident Evil, with some scary parts, interesting story, long game and good atmosphere. Then Capcom decided to transform the whole series in a shooter with zombies...

Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is a similar story, Infinity Ward transformed a bland WWII series that it was competing with Medal Of Honor back then, into a modern/current warfare game, with excellent story and good action, but as we all know, Activision's greediness froze the innovation for the game (gameplay & tecnology) after the extreme success and decided to recycle the game year after year with no real innovation, and not happy with that, it makes another similar series (Black Ops) with a different setting. EA is just another greedy company trying to copy the success of COD. After all, companies have one goal only: Make money and get profits.
Metroid Prime series.
People said, "Oh, this is a great game, but NOT a real Metroid! It should be third-person and made in Japan!" Nintendo obliges the whiners with Other M...and subsequently shanks Samus so badly that she can barely manage a cameo on NintendoLand.

I don't agree with Diablo 2, mainly because I consider the Torchlight series the "true" heirs to Diablo, but that's just IMO

...Did they not see that they did released new 2D metroids for the GBA. And Metroid Prime was not a real Metroid?! The whole game was practically a remake of Super Metroid!!

It both starts with you in a space station and than on the surface of a planet during a stormy rain!!!

Metroid Prime wasn't the problem. Other M was. The GBA games were quite good, but that didn't stop fanboys from "OMFG WANT NEW AAA METROID TRADITIONAL NOOOOOOWWW!" And as a result, we got....Other M.
Resident Evil 4 is a good one... and I didn't like that game either, so double whammy.

WoW turned all MMOs into WoW.

Final Fantasy VII kind of ruined JRPGs for me.
someone tell me how does megaman battle network get a million different games but the one i love megaman legends not get a third game?
