Hi everybody,
I was just wondering which gog games have most epic interesting stories. And by epic I mean Beyond good and evil, Fallout (1,2),Divine Divinity and of course Another World.
Beyond Good & Evil is a good canditate for that.

I can't even think of anything else that might challenge it right now.
I haven't played any of the titles you mention. But the Longest Journey has a very good story, definitely the best I've seen in a game.

Oh. loved that game. great word and characters but story was hardly that impressive. slightly on the cliche side.

Arcanum and BG are more of a well made atmosphere, if you look at the main storyline it feels overly shallow but is completely made up for because of other factors of the game imho. If you're taking the theme and atmosphere into account instead of storyline, I would list Blood, Arx Fatalis and Robinson's Requiem as well.

I haven't played any of those other games.
Betrayal at Krondor was an immense game with an immense story that I haven't played in an immensely long time.

And I might go with that. ^ ^

An interesting story doesn't have to be an epic story, and games that claim to have "epic" stories make me suspicious.

Beyond Good and Evil: "YOU ARE THE CHOSEN ONE. SAVE THE WORLD."
Fallout: "YOU ARE THE CHOSEN ONE. SAVE THE VAULT."
Divine Divinity: "YOU ARE THE CHOSEN ONE. SAVE THE WORLD."
Dragon Age: "OH SHIT DUNCAN'S DEAD."

As far as storylines go, it's the journey, not the destination, but the journey's a lot less fun when you're driving to North Dakota.

Games I haven't played yet but have high hopes for:
* The Longest Journey
* Sanitarium
* Syberia

I had high hopes for Baldur's Gate, but Daedolon just dashed them. On the bright side, I now have high hopes for Betrayal at Krondor--thanks, Daisil.

Krondor has what I call plot tax. Of course, it's common in not-RPGs which actually have a story to speak of, but a downer ending really makes the tax obvious.

The plot tax is this: your in-game achievements do not translate directly to in-game benefits; instead the reward is witnessing another chapter of the story unfold. If the eventual result is "you win" I have no problem, but if it's "you die" it's painfully obvious that I didn't achieve anything (in-game) by playing. It creates a disconnect between gameplay and story, makes directing characters an equivalent to turning pages in a book. (Note: this is common in Japanese RPGs, and, big surprise, I don't like Japanese RPGs for this very reason.)

The story of Krondor is ye olde fantasy plot done well. If only it didn't have a downer ending, it'd be a fantastic game. The more the game expects me to care for the characters, the better outcome I expect to get for my efforts. Krondor doesn't deliver.

Anyway, I cast my vote for Gabriel Knight I. The plot doesn't have any loose branches, the puzzles are perfectly logical, no pixel hunting, no lolrandum triggers (that plagued King's Quest VI). I'd have given half my life to have written the initial puzzle of Day 10.
The Longest Journey is a great game, definitely the best story on GoG, of the few that I've played. Of the others that were mentioned here, BG&E is a very fun game, but its story barely made an impression, and got wonky right at the end. Syberia gets a lot of praise, but I personally couldn't stand it and stopped playing near the end-one of the few adventure games I haven't finished once started.

As far as Detlik's request goes, that doesn't sound like much of a detriment--depending on personal taste. I don't need a happy ending to enjoy a story, as long as it's a satisfying ending. For example, compare Star War's "dancing bears" to Lord of the Ring's "Frodo sails away".
Thanks everybody for replies, I will definitely check everything out (Arcanum and BG looks most promising to me). But to specifiy : Games which really sucked me in by its atmosphere and/or story : Witcher, Beyond good and evil, Fallout series, Mass effect series, Dragon age, Kotor series, Devil May Cry 3 and 4, Divine Divinity, Another World, Bioshock 1, Deus ex 1, most Final Fantasy games, God of War, Heavy rain, Darkness, Half life 2, Oblivion,
