If you preordered Botanicula on GOG.com or have been paying attention to this quirky adventure game, you very probably heard all of the noise around the Humble Botanicula Debut and how some users were left rather unhappy about paying $8.99 for a preorder of the game while people who bought it on day one could pay whatever they wanted for it and they got more goodies than the GOG.com preorder provided.

This left an unsurprisingly sour taste in some gamers’ mouths, and we were just as surprised by the launch of the Humble Botanicula Debut as anyone else was. As soon as we saw the bundle, we reached out to the guys at Amanita about providing our users with something in return for their preorders; we got them to agree to give us a number of goodies from the bundle, and we’re giving you and every other user who bought the game before 12:00 GMT on the 20th of April will receive a few things. Everyone who bought Botanicula before we published this news will automatically be getting Machinarium to your shelf on Monday, and we’ll be emailing all of those purchasers with links where they can download the full soundtrack and a special artbook of Botanicula designs and character sketches.

Finally, we wanted to give you guys something that you couldn’t get in the Humble Bundle to make sure that you didn’t feel like you got a raw deal. To that end, courtesy of our fine friends at CDP RED, we’re happy to let you know that we’re also giving you and everyone else who already bought Botanicula a free copy of The Witcher: Enhanced Edition Director’s Cut! This game will also be on your shelf on Monday, so look for it then.

At GOG.com, we’ll never knowingly disappoint you, and while this preorder mishap may have made you a little unhappy, we hope that you enjoy Botanicula--it’s a fantastic game and many of us here at the office are fans--and, if you’d like to say “thanks!” to our pals at CDP RED, check out The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition, available right now at your favorite DRM-free game store, GOG.com.

Have a great weekend!

spinefarm: And by what is GOG obligated to do that? Amanita Design screwed up... GOG is not obligated to cover their sh*t. The whole tone you are using is like that GOG screw you in some way ;)

zarevak: I'm sorry if it feels that way. I'm very happy with GOG and how they handled the situation.

I just wanted to express my discontent, how Amanita completely ignores us, who preordered their game. I was hoping GOG is able to raise some pressure on Amanita to give GOG all the goodies they are giving to Humble Bundle.
Yeah it sux for people who preorder it.. I will still buy it from GOG cause the whole site is great... I can give the HIB guys 1$ for the extras but still considering it
Well as I already bought both of the freebie games I was wondering will I get a second copy added to my account? No answer from support at the moment and I only have 1 copy in my account

Glad GOG are trying to do the right thing, shame on Amanita

If you already own them on GOG - they've stated that they will give another extra ... I guess they are overwhelmed with letters and considering that GOG is not a very big company it takes time.

That would sound about right...Ill leave em be for a bit till the dust settles
Honestly if I bought the game here I would have been bummed out but hey, that's indie bundles for ya. Buy the game at full price, support the company so they make more good games, then it comes out in a bundle and everyone else gets the game for almost nothing.
high rated
I have absolutely no problem with other people getting the games I chose to pay for nearly for free and I also don't mind them getting lots of cool extras. I like indie bundles myself and I sympathize with developers who are generous towards gamers. The only problem I see in the case of Amanita is that while they're very generous to the masses in general, at the same time they neglect their most dedicated supporters who chose to pre-order on GOG and GamersGate. Because the latter are denied these generous extras that everyone could get almost for free.

You get no special treatment, you are not rewarded in any way for supporting them by pre-ordering or paying full price, and that's fine because the game is worth paying for and it's our free decision to support Amanita or not. But it's still a kick in the teeth of the customers when you're actually punished for choosing to buy from GOG because you only get a demo soundtrack. Even with the new compromise the people who pre-ordered only get a one time download link for the full soundtrack, it's not added to their account.

I don't think Amanita meant to disrespect their supporters and maybe there are licensing issues with the DVA album that prevent them from offering the whole thing to GOG, who knows. But what matters is the outward appearance; they've acted very careless and clumsy regarding the marketing and customer relations and the worst thing is they don't even seem to grasp the extent of it, the actual reason why people were mad. It's not about the money or the amount of bonus material, it's about loyal supporters feeling that their support is not appreciated and that Amanita doesn't really care for them because Amanita makes presents to everyone but them. It's like saying: "I don't need to do anything for you because you're my fan already, and paying for my games should be your reward.".

Sure, they tried to make amends. But it wasn't them who came up with the idea to offer the soundtrack, the artbook and Machinarium to the people who pre-ordered, and besides, that was more about damage control, not really a reward since you'd get the same and more from the HIB. Both the initiative to recompense and the actual gift came from GOG. And as much as I love Amanita's games that's what I find so disappointing, their lack of understanding and the absence of a sincere gesture of reconciliation.

(Kudos to GOG for how they handled it though! You guys rock! :) )

This! +1000
Coupled with the fact that there is even MORE extras added now to the HIB is just another slap in the face of their preordering customers and their business partner.
You see this is what I love about GOG.

I already have a copy of The Witcher on here, but I didn't want that code to go to waste.
So I send a support ticket, asking for a gift code to give out to someone.

A day or two later, they send me a gift key no problem.

Why can't steam be like that?

Because the universe needs balance.
Gift received.
Thanks a lot for the awesome move !

Thank you for writing this so nicely - I took me 3 posts to convey my feelings and you hit the nail on the head in you first post :)
And Leroux's point is why I want a refund (or store credit). The problem is I can't get ahold of anyone at GOG to discuss options. I wrote three emails, and today got three identical form letters, one for each email. I'm sorry, but that doesn't help. I already have the Witcher, and I already have Machinarium (from another site). So it was a great offer, but it doesn't help me. I'm not trying to weasel more freebies out of GOG, I just want the Amanita software gone. With a store credit I can buy something I actually want (like Grimlock maybe). But I can't get a real person at GOG to send me anything but form letters. I have honored GOG's policies by not downloading the software and asking within 7 days. I am only asking GOG to honor their own policies.
I have a question, I apologize in advance if this has been asked before. Do people that are just buying the game via GOG still get The Witcher or is that only for pre and first day orders?

I'm asking so that I know whether to keep staring at My Account til the witcher appears there or just give up. I read the first post but for me it wasn't really clear if the offer includes those that are buying the game late, like me.

Either way, it's a nice move by GOG, you don't see many companies doing that nowadays.

The first post says it is given to everyone who bought Botanicula " before 12:00 GMT on the 20th of April"
You know, I'd been on the edge about getting most of these titles since I'm not even certain whether my computer could handle them or not. I really only cared about getting Machinarium but I couldn't bring myself to accept the current GOG price for it (and it still doesn't feel like a $10 game).

I guess I should still thank GOG, though, because if it wasn't for this thread, I'd not have known about the Indie Bundle until I checked my email, which wouldn't have been for a few more days. By then the bundle might be over or the average too much for me to afford.

I'm still a pretty satisfied overall GOG customer, and I realize this may not be GOG's fault.. but the modern/indie games just don't feel fairly priced (then again, games like Recettear jumping from the original $5 to $20 on Steam is pretty screwed up, too). I know the Indie developers want to make a profit, and I'm sure GOG wants to be able to afford to keep this site up... but honestly, I think sometimes the Indie guys start getting a bit greedy when they think they're getting successful.

Anyways, thanks to GOG for the 3 EA titles I just purchased, and thanks to those of you here in this thread for talking about the Humble Bundle I might've missed out on. Paid $9 bucks for it and got more than I would've asked for. It's also more than I should have spent considering other purchases made here and on Steam in the last couple weeks.. but I think it's money well spent.

I also agree that those who bought Botanicula as preorder did pretty much get the shaft. I remember when GOG would bring out an "old" game, and later add more content, that the people who'd already bought it would still get it without having to pay more. Hell I don't think the price even went up most of the time. I have a feeling those days will end soon.
