Considering pretty much every other store site is now a Steam key seller I don't think these people are that insane to assume GOG will provide one.

This, pretty much. Steam has so much power over the PC gaming market anyway, it's really never that far off to think that.

I think it's really more an indication of how braindead, lazy and spoon-fed most PC gamers are nowadays.

Anyway try to contact Square Enix with your proof of purchase from GOG and explain the situation to them, they just might provide you with a Steam key to the game.

I find it quite understandable if someone thinks mistakenly that all PC games on all stores are Steam games. Honest mistake.

It is also good that some people find out about the options (like GOG), even if by mistake. I hope the OP gives his purchases a chance, even if he doesn't have to log into the Steam client in order to run the games, and doesn't get any achievements with the GOG versions. The games themselves still work great, even without a Steam client.

But if you want to try to get a refund, please make sure you don't download, or even try to download, any of the games, or their extras.

It's worth pointing out that if you've never downloaded the game then GOG are usually quite good about refunds.

Every time I see a thread created questioning GOG about Steam keys, I wish GOG would put "we don't sell Steam keys" in big, bold letters somewhere on the front page.

Hmm, I have rather limited experience with forums and the ones I frequent seem to also be quick with replies, but your reasoning makes sense.


The OP reads more like a statement of confusion (and maybe a bit of disappointment) to me, what makes you feel they're complaining?

I wasn't only reffering to this thread but several others were "the old users" have talked down and been jerks to new users with in this case threads which in their opinions asks dumb questions or are poorly asked.
In this thread it isn't so much but the tone is often harsh and meant to make the OP feel unwelcome or stupid, sometimes because of poor english or lack of knowledge.
Some people may not agree with me but I think this forum is here for people to have fun, ask questions and discuss interesting things. Not to create hierarchies and make people mad.

The first time HumbleBundle provided a bundle with mostly Steam-keys instead of DRM-free downloads, I was really disappointed, just to see, that all the others followed.
GoG is really standing out of this mess and one of the reasons why I stayed here although I am/was very annoyed about the refusal of the existing native Linux ports, properly packagaed DosBox packages (multi-OS) etc...

I agree, no need to downrep OP for asking a question, sheesh. People probably took offense to the OP for saying "use your education", but I think what OP was trying to say was lost in translation, and wasn't really something that's offensive.

It's obvious to us that GOG doesn't sell steam keys, but like others have said, a lot of stores which sell DRM-free games also give steam keys, or sell both types of games, DRM and DRM-free. Honest mistake, really.

Customers are the boss, and most customers want Steam to take over all of PC gaming. It is what it is, you can't fight the vast majority.

Luckily GOG has carved out a profitable niche service the rest of us when they can.
