Those tech videos always seem to underwhelm me. With all the promises and talk, they come up with a tech demo that looks exactly the same as the graphics we see today.

Until they can show in game graphics that look significantly better than the best to date (probably Crysis) then it's nothing to get excited about.

The close up of the dirt was pretty cool...
It looks like they're using the technology for mapping, which is a cool application of it. I imagine they'll keep to this course for now because it's easier. The main limitation I saw in what they've shown is animation, and there's no need for that in this system. Current AAA titles are all about animated and changing environments, so if that functionality isn't available it's a problem for games.
I hate the fact the guy loves the word unlimited too much.

Tech videos always look better than what they can do when finished. I will believe it if he ever shows hwo he is truly handling animation and more action on the screen instead of a static environment.


This reminds me of the great infinity space tech demo's that come out every two years and they are still years away from any kind of release although they are more open than this group and are looking at a kickstarter in the near future which is great.

I agree, this sort of thing is great for some sorts of things. I love the random terrain generation that some RTS and RPGs have, but I think that if it were really realistic that iD would have been already all over it by now. And if not iD probably the guys over at Epic. I think between them they have an astonishing amount of technical expertise on the matter.

But yeah, using the word unlimited that many times seems to suggest more wishful thinking than anything else. As an element in a game engine, I can see it, but we're nowhere near the point where we have the storage capacity and processing power to handle it. I mean, we can't even render raytracing in real time with enough detail to make it worthwhile.
I actually wonder if he knows what the word unlimited means? =) With machines their are limits...computers have limits....so in that respect how can he claim unlimited...just makes no sense.

Indeed. Interestingly enough, some supercomputers are now limited by the SPEED OF LIGHT ITSELF. They can perform calculations so quickly that the length of the wires has to be taken into consideration. Several companies have paid enormous amounts of money to get their stock-trading computers housed within the NYSE so that their wires are shorter, and thus their trades are faster. :D

Pretty sure that's true for ALL computers - CPUs and GPUs in particular. Why do you think everybody wants to go lower and lower nm? Not just to cram more transistors on a chip, but the smaller everything is the faster the current can travel from one part to the next.
