Vault_Boy: The game does not display all these folks at once. You can see that when driving by several cars inside a tunnel or on a bridge. Then stop your car and wait... only a handful will drive by you and not the whole dozen or so that you overtook just a few moments before, the others just vanished. And the game plays on up to six year old consoles quite wll, meaning it is not that demanding but badly optimized for the PC.
The game had some nasty memory leak where over time it would get slower and slower... but it looks like the latest patches fixed that to some extent. Still, it seems the engine is wasting resources on something, there's also some weird scaling going on with the shadows and water reflections (at high resolutions the reflection becoems incredibly grainy but there was some trick described somewhere to give it a clean look).
I haven't played GTA 4. *hangs head* I love the idea of stealing cars and everything, and driving them around like crazy, but I'm not thrilled with having to kill cops, etc. :/

It's ok if they're dirty cops. Just tell yourself they're dirty. All the women you just ran over were probably hookers, too. See? Its easy.

You have to get into the GTA mindset. Everyone in the GTA world is a corrupt bastard, there is no such thing as an innocent bystander. It's one of the things media like Fox news just doesn't get.

They're all corrupt, evil and psychotic.
Also I drive on pedestrian sidewalks because all the people walking down the paths are clones of Hitler.

Anybody remember Road Rash?(if that is the game I'm thinking about) Old ladies that would swing walkers at you and cops (all of them Irish) would try to beat you off your bike? The ultimate pedestrian polo game.

Remeber it? When Terry hands Johnny a bat before his first race in The Lost and the Damned Johnny says "lets show these guys some Road Rash" ^_^
Bought it on a Steam sale for 10 dollars or something for GTA4, LATD and TBOGT. I've enjoyed the game so far. Despite the low frame rate, the need to go out with friends in the game or the fact that I had to start the game again because Steam Cloud or GFWL didn't backed up my saved games. Some times it feels like a chore though.

What I prefer about GTA is not so much the stealing, killing and all the gangster stuff, but just discovering the huge city with all its amazing details while listening to what is in my opinion the best soundtrack of any video game by far. Also there is a constant humor in the game which really helps as a counterbalance to all the violence involved.
It helps that they aren't innocent, I guess. If it goes on sale during the summer sale on Steam or something, I might pick it up. :)

Yup, the most evil people in the game are the ones that honk u when you're trying to cross the road. Most of the time, if not all the time, they become the receiving end of my bazooka round.
Out of interest, did any of you ever bother hunting these pigeons? I didn't kill even one for lack of motivation but instead tired to imagine what happened if Shale from Dragon Age: Origins were let loose in Liberty City... ahhh, the carnage.

I haven't bothered with the pidgeons because there are 200 of the bastards and unlike the hidden packages in previous games you only get one reward and that's a spawning Annihilator helicopter. It's not really worth the time and effort.

I tried hunting down all the flying rats using an online guide. I eventually gave up after killing around 50 though. It's actually kind of fun because they are often hidden in some rather obscure or difficult to reach places, so you get to see some pretty interesting parts of the map that you never would have seen otherwise. However, I have to say 200 pidgeons is rather excessive. 50 - 100 would have been enough. It just becomes a chore after a while, so I stopped.

For me, the game stops when I hear the coo of a pigeon. For a brief moment, the mission, the cops, everything becomes secondary. Until the bird is taken care of. It's not the reward that is important, it's the hunt! :)
