As someone who deals with bipolar head on due to having a family member with the condition, I can safely say that I am not even slightly offended by the comment. This journo should work for RPS with that kind of language sensitivity.

I think it's the idea that they are explaining the motivations for criminal behavior and that character's is just "he's bipolar and thus crazy."

Yeah, I've got an uncle whose bipolar disorder basically destroyed his family. But I don't see how that comment could be offensive in the slightest. Hell, I'm not offended every time some character with an anxiety disorder (which I have) is portrayed as completely hilariously nuts.

Besides which, it's GTA. Is an offhand remark about a mental disorder really that much worse than anything else in the series?

Well, sounds like wires got crossed somewhere. "Bipolar" doesn't necessarily mean "totally crazy" - but maybe the "totally crazy" thing was just a phrase, like "You should have seen what Trevor did last night - he was totally crazy!" and then he was actually specifying that the dude is "just bipolar" - ie, a smart guy who happens to have some mental issues, in case anyone took his "totally crazy" comment too literally.

I think one can read too much into it and maybe find issue with it, but that's my take.

In some ways, GTA's disconnect between plot progression and player action (AKA intrepid former criminal laments his past murders of innocents after landing a bus on hundreds of people for fun) can be viewed as a representation of bipolar disorder itself.

I'm having a vision... I see... a PC version in mid-2014... and... it runs like shit on my machine... I also see that I'll buy a new high-end machine the same year... and the game will still run like shit...

I feel I'm going to get the PC version, if it ever comes out. Looks way, way better than GTA4.
