4GB is the size limit of each file on a FAT32 volume, not the volume size limit (that's, at least theoretically, 2TB with a cluster size of 512 bytes, or 16TB with a 4KB cluster size).

out of interest - have you tried using firefox with the "DownThemAll" extension? - its pretty good for speeding up bad connections, though I doubt it'd do anything for you if your speed is maxed out with a gog download, but may be otherwise useful to you.
I'm guessing you'll be based in the highlands, the islands or rural wales by your speeds and statement of remoteness?!

I use Firefox and a downloader already but 64K is with the line maxed out and of course it ties it up for emails and the likes. It's real pain when they keep bombarding me with junk mail about their new 20Mb suer-fast broadband deals with small print on the back page saying "or as fast as your line supports". I wouldn't mind it if they only charged me 1/32 of the 20 meg rate ! There's no 3G coverage here either so my mobile 'dongle' is no use either.

Damn! Thats an arse! Hopefully you should be okay after everything starts turning to 4g - I heard "3" network intends to extend 3g coverage all over as a roaming extension, plus labour put a plan into action to ensure all citizens have access to unresricted 256 minimum by 2015 I think.

I'm fine with doing BoxOfSnoo's suggestion. I can take the files and randomly corrupt some bytes in them that the GOG downloader will correct and send them to you on DVDs (unless staff appear and object).

I had a quick look but "Snowdonia" is a vague description so I am a minimum of ~50 miles away from you. Hit me up with a PM if you are willing to meet in person and can give me a more accurate address. My other half is an amateur photographer so I could probably make a weekend trip out of visiting the area and she can take a lot of photos of the landscape and such. I would test first if a random byte corruption causes the whole big chunk to be deleted and redownloaded vs a truncation or incomplete download.

I haven't tried it for obvious reasons but if corrupting as little as one byte caused a complete 2Gb section download it wouldn't help me anyway.

Xyem, I'm very grateful for your offer but I couldn't possibly put you to all that trouble for the sake of a computer game. Until such time as a fast connection reaches these parts, I'll stick to small downloads.

The "chunks" aren't that big. I'd imagine they are a couple of megabytes at most.

You have no local internet cafe or a friend who's dad really likes porn and has sprung for a better connection? Someone who works at a place with a T1 line into the building?

I know you probably can't use the local library, but it seems like someone must have some sort of connection within bicycling distance.

I doubt it Snowdonia is pretty much the middle of nowhere he doesn't even have 3g connection. (I thought where I lived was bad :)

I didn't think the downloader repaired anymore, at least not since the switch from chunk downloading.

How recent was that change?

It was either during or immediately following the Interplay bundle sale a while back. it was in October, IiRC.
