As I said, I would agree with you if we were talking about any other DD site.
But with sale 50% off, GOG is selling games for 3$ and 5$.
They sold 35k Witcher 2 copies, and it's tenth bestselling game (not counting freebies or those games which were free at some point).
That means most games on GOG won't sell, even with promo sale, better than 5k-25k copies (at this moment. As GOG gets more users, it will be better).
When they lower price from 6$ to 3$ just to sell 500 copies (I'm not talking about bestsellers like fallout or bg here) they just get 1500$, and it's just not worth it.
If Steam sells 1 mln copies of a game for 2$, it's still 2 mln $ (and Steam has 2,5 mln users online every day). That's why crazy sale on Steam is profitable (and that's how IndieRoyal or HIB works - just different scale), and on GOG - it's profitable, but it's just not worth to.
GOG makes money on new releases, when mainly US residents (and to be fair - some western Europeans too) spend their money because of nostalgia, and they buy those games at full price.
Promo sales on GOG are mainly for ppl from poor countries, or for US/western Europe unemployed ppl. Or cheapskates.
