I have made a few in the past which didn't fare so well, perhaps due to being pics only. I have a mic and room for video files of gameplay but don't know a good app/apps to record the video from the game and my voice as well while I play.

Anyone got any good freeware/etc suggestions? Also how does it usually work when one makes a video let's play? Do you play and record your voice/gameplay using one app, or one for voice and one for gameplay capturing? And does it spit out a complete video with voiceovers when you're done "recording" or do you have to merge the two yourself?

Also is it possible to pause the recording(of voice/gameplay simultaneously preferably.) while playing so one doesn't have to edit the let's play later to remove bits one doesn't want shown(like swearing/bugs/etc you might want to cut out.)?

Thanks in advance

I looked into this a little bit back when I was trying to make some LP's.

You might find this thread very helpful, people were most kind!

I put mine off 'til I have a computer that can run recording software along with the game >.<
I know that for recording purposes most people recommend Fraps, it has a free trial which you are able to use. You could also use Camtasia.

For Audio, Audacity would be your best bet.

If you need help or tips on getting your let's play noticed or reviewed check out the Reddit lets plays forum. Also remember to put good tags in your video description, it increases your chances of being one of the first videos people see in the search engine.

Also tips from a famous let's player on how to get noticed (NintendoCapriSun) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWRxFEf8h6U

Good luck though, i'm sure if you started making videos many gog members would be willing to support you and view your videos ;D

Thanks for the info. I wish there were an app that just combined everything for you though. It looks here like i'd need one app for voice, and another for video. I have Fraps already for screenshots and such and might test out a commentary-less let's play first(to not have to mess with a voice app and merging the files to begin with until I am better at it).

Hmm, I wonder if it'd be possible to record using Fraps for game audio/video, and then use another app later on(while watching a playback of the gameplay) to record my comments on each part of the gameplay into a sorta synched commmentary audio file & then find a way to merge them somehow.
I've only used fraps to record my gameplay, then use windows movie maker to slim down the size. I do believe that you can record your voice with the movie maker and add it to wherever needed. I've never used the voice portion so I cannot tell you the sound quality.

So i'd record with Fraps running(gameplay) and then use Windows Movie Maker to add my commentary in?

Does anyone know how this is possible and how to do this when editing a fraps created gameplay video with WMM?

I might use Fraps for gameplay footage/sound, and add in audio either using Audacity or WMM. Question: How does one merge the two(gameplay fottage from fraps and commentary from Audacity) exactly? Do you just record the commentary in Audacity or can you also use it to merge the commentary made in Audacity and gameplay footage from fraps into one file?

I personally have not tried this, but I am assuming Fraps can capture both game audio and microphone audio. In the Movies section of Fraps, you can select to "Record external input" which would likely account for your microphone. You can also set it where it will only record external output when you press the key of your choice. Again, I have not tested this, but I am assuming this would cover all your needs.

On a more general note, for recording software, the most popular options tend to be:
Fraps (I highly recommend it)
PlayClaw (paid)
ZD Soft Screen Recorder (paid)
Camtasia (free)
Xfire (free)
WeGame (free, not so great compression last I tried)

For editing software, the best two choices I have found on the free side are:
TrakAx (two versions, free one has decent features still)
Windows LIVE Movie Maker

A side note regarding Fraps, it will still require some basic movie editing once you are done recording. The software breaks all videos up into 4GB chunks I believe it is, so you will need to use VirtualDub or the software of your choice to piece them back together, but in the end it is a fairly quick process.

I'm not sure entirely as i haven't recorded myself doing things.

Quick youtube search brings up this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZ9suzveUlA which includes someone telling you how he does put them together using Audacity, Fraps and WMM so give that a shot. Just ignore the emulator part since it applies to anything (he just so happens to record LPs of emulated games).

Well, I was gonna try to type out a demo on what to do, but after my reformat, Windows put the newer, crappy wmm on here.

I would def get the older WMM, it has a long line that has the time on it and much easier to work with. Different time bars each for music, voice, and the movie. Off the top of my head, you should be able to record a clip and slide it to the desired spot for the commentary. Unsure if you can slide to that part of the clip and record as it plays as of course I've never done it. That's what I did for adding different sections of music to my clips.
I think it's easier to also edit with wmm too.

Well I hope to not go 4GB video sizes but thanks for that last bit of info.

I did check Fraps and it does say it can record from my mic.....which is nice. A few setup questions:

Under video capture settings, I can set 60FPS/50FPS/30FPS/custom FPS, and also full size or half size video. Defaults are full size video and 30FPS.....are these adequate for my needs, or should I change them?

I might just follow Kurina's post and use fraps for everything, but will possibly use WMM for shrinking file size. What formats does WMM allow for when converting files(such as from fraps) with it? Also which is best(if more than one option is available) in terms of file size and audio/video quality?

Having created well over 1000 LP videos, I can say that you will likely need multiple recorder programs. For editing, I've found that VirtualDub is good enough for my needs.

The most useful recording programs so far for me are FRAPS or ZDSoft's Screen Recorder. I've had some use for the Hyper Cam 2 program, but I'm not sure how well it would work on Windows games. Please bear in mind that DOSBox has its own built in recording capability.

WMM can save as anything, but I think the best and have always saved as .avi. The newer WMM lets you upload straight to youtube right in the app.

What's your channel? I love to take a look.
I have made over 150 youtube Videos and only use Fraps to record gameplay and Voice. Fraps has an option to support Windows Sound and also External Input you just need to have them both checked .

I use Camtasia Studio to Edit and Render the Video and then just use the youtube uploader.

The only downside is rendering really , it takes alot of time to render even quite short HD videos , unless of course you have a very powerful up to date PC ,

There is also a great freeware program for recording your screen called Debut , check it out and good luk with your videos :)

I forget to say try and get a good Mic/Headset the sound in my VIdeos has improved so much since I got my Turtle Beach Headset.

I'm possibly going to just use fraps and edit it down to size in WMM. I am just practicing so i'll see how it goes and if I have issues i'll of course try other methods.

That sounds useful. I'll have to take a look at that later on.

How long would it take to render/convert a normal 10 minutes let's play video considering I have a quad core 2.2 Ghz?

As for headsets well i'm not trying to make oscar worthy videos for now so I hope my current setup works eh what? :)
