Leroux: Any opinions on Starseed Pilgrim and Beatbuddy? Are they any good, how good and why?
I played Beatbuddy up to some point in the second chapter, then lost interest. It's not a bad game, but it just didn't really have anything that made it stand out or that would make me choose it over other games that I could play.
It mostly plays like a puzzle platformer (though technically it's not really a platformer since you don't jump; IIRC the game takes place under water and you can swim in any direction). You navigate through hazardous areas, evade enemies, and solve little puzzles to open more passages. Puzzles mostly involve directing a pulse to the desired destination by rotating mirrors, or shooting at some trigger to open a path (and then quickly swimming there because it will close again soon). The game tries do something original with rhythm - some enemies move to the beat of the background music, and one vehicle that you drive does so as well. It's unusual and piqued my interest, but led to some annoying moments in the game. The story, as far as I played it, is okay, but again not something that's worth playing a game for.
In the end, I'd say "Beatbuddy" is nice to have, and worth a look if you get it in a bundle, but not worth paying extra money for.
