Not in, but thanks Lou for the great giveaway series! Lots of people have had an entertaining time, fun in joining and of course winning. I just wanted to say thanks and contribute to this week's discussion topic.
Giveaways are a nice institution here on GOG. They nurture a culture of giving, but as already mentioned also a culture of taking. However, just because some people overdo the taking, it would be sad to smother the giving. It's like in every society, there's always a strong incentive to defect for personal gain, even though the system would yield the most benefit if everybody would cooperate (check the
Take-One-Give-One giveaway thread for an example of both). Perfect cooperation is an ideal never to be accomplished, but as long as we're talking about random giveaways, taking is ruled by Lady Luck anyway. While I also prefer people entering for games they'll actually play (not necessarily right away), I think the main goal of giveaways isn't distributing games, but to make people happy. And somebody who already owns a lot of games has the same right to be happy, as everybody else. On the other hand, if the game to win will never be played, it might find a better home with someone else. The truth lies somewhere in between. This leads to my opinion that giveaways can't be seen and judged as charity events, where only those in need should enter, but as an generous act of giving for the sake of happiness and entertainment of the community. Furthermore it's also like Momo has stated several times before, after a while many takers also become givers and this culture of giving even spreads into real life and that's a very good thing.
